The New York State Society was formed on June 9, 1783 to keep alive the spirit and principles of the American Revolution, to do special honor to the memory of George Washington, to perpetuate among its members the friendships first established by his original Line officers, and to assist those members who may be in need. These principles are what drive the educational and charitable activities of the New York State Society today.

By 1775 the differences between the colonies and Britain had become so acute that the colonies began openly to offer military resistance, and in 1776 they formally declared their independence. At the same time, the North American troops that had recently been organized to fight the French were now called upon to fight for American independence. Death of General Montgomery at Quebec 1775. The foundation for the establishment of the Society was built on three principles: to preserve the friendships from the war, to keep alive the memories of the sacrifices made by this founding generation and, when necessary, to provide financial support to those members or families of members when they might be in need.
