New York Diary: January 2006
http://nydiary.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html
Dog Supplies - Dog.com. I recently read Bernard Lewis's The Assassins. A reasonably scholarly account of the Ismailis generally (they being the second largest Shi'a community after the Twelvers) and the Assassins in particular (they being a particular Ismaili sect, now pretty much defunct). Their historical story is gripping, and it kind of surprises me that we don't have more references to it in popular culture. Posted by Skay @ 11:51 AM. Posted by Skay @ 3:54 AM. This brings me to my second point. ...
New York Diary: -end-
http://nydiary.blogspot.com/2007/02/end.html
Dog Supplies - Dog.com. But I've always had vague plans to travel extensively. Now I will indulge them. If there's anything that being established in New York has given me, it's a renewed sense of wanderlust, along with a bankroll to finance it. In March, I fly to my home away from home in Indonesia, where I will meet old friends. From there, the world awaits. So long, all. It's been an awful lot of fun. Posted by Skay @ 10:35 AM. Shawnakim.loweyball AT gmail.com. ADDRESSES, as promised.

Dog Supplies - Dog.com. L'homme est né libre, et partout il est dans les fers. Peut-être ils sont les chaînes d'une ignorance inculte et stupide, heeuuu? I've been reading Rousseau lately- not. Which it seems that everybody reads at sometime or another, but. Let me say two things upfront, for those of you who may not be familiar with either the book or its author. First,. Or at least, I don't remember it much in that work), but it is clear as a bell in. Of choice while simultaneously carefully controllin...
New York Diary: this is what happens when you don't democratize science
http://nydiary.blogspot.com/2006/11/this-is-what-happens-when-you-dont.html
Dog Supplies - Dog.com. This is what happens when you don't democratize science. Today's Tuesday Morning Quarterback. The best football roundup on the web (or in the papers, or on TV), explains that the Chandrasekhar limit isn't actually a limit. Gregg Easterbrook (who writes TMQ) elaborates better than I could, and I urge you to read at least that bit of this week's column, because the implications are dazzling. But you're not going to go read it, are you? 1 Cosmic expansion is not accelerating. Search ...

This Wide World: October 2007
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html
A city and its buildings. Last weekend, I was in Chicago. It's a lovely city. Q has two observations:. 1 Corrupt and absolute leadership gets things done. (Downside: corrupt and absolute leadership has few checks on the. Of things it gets done, however.) This helps explain many of the nicer elements of the Loop and environs. (It also helps explain many of the seedier and downright immoral practices of the current government.). It doesn't fit. As a result, the building takes away from the surroundings...
This Wide World: Jemaa el-Fna at night
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/jemaa-el-fna-at-night.html
Jemaa el-Fna at night. If Casablanca is the business center of Morocco, and if Fez is the heart of the tourist industry here, than Marrakesh is the soul of the country. It is, of course, moneyed. It is, of course, touristy. But Marrakesh is beautiful and interesting and, even more, it is full of modern Moroccans enjoying an old, traditional Moroccan way of life. The first thing I noticed on getting off the bus in Marrakesh was that there was. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.
This Wide World: she's back!
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/10/shes-back.html
So here I am back in the United States and, after a long hiatus, what do I choose to blog about? Well, baseball, of course! Anybody who's been following the postseason of this greatest of all sports will know that, barring a miracle (or a disaster), Joe Torre, longtime manager of the Yankees, is now out of a job. This follows the fact of the Yankees' loss last night (and after a beautiful game of small (ish) ball on Sunday, too - more on that below). This is not a worry in New York. With Joe, without...
This Wide World: plants, animals, people, and a beautiful starry sky
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/07/plants-animals-people-and-beautiful.html
Plants, animals, people, and a beautiful starry sky. Here I am in Zimbabwe! I think I love Zimbabwe. In my first 24 hours here, I rode 20 kilometers in the back of a truck along with my brother, my pack, and 10 other (Zimbabwean) passengers, exchanged money on the black market, sat around a campfire under an impressively starry sky, and saw a shocking amount of big game while just walking around. It's great. Ezra D. Feldman. 19 July, 2007 17:42. Fermented palm fruit. They like the stuff. Ben's Faith and ...
This Wide World: 5 Degrees of Separation
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/07/5-degrees-of-separation.html
5 Degrees of Separation. There is a story here, a story to do with finding accomodation and meeting people in Senegal. Consider my brother, staying in an expensive (if nice) hotel far outside Dakar, unable to speak French,* and in need of a more cost-effective place to sleep. Well, my brother knows me. And I know V, a friend from college. And V knows M, a work colleague who lives in Yoff (one of Dakar's suburbs). And M knows N, a lovely lady who lives just up her street. And she has a lovely family, all ...
This Wide World: Hasssan II Mosque
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/hasssan-ii-mosque.html
The best feature of Casablanca is the Hassan II Mosque. It's awesome, a new and thoroughy modern construction with retractable roof, escalators, heated marble floor (in witer), and titanium doors. But it's also an incredible masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship: 10,000 Moroccan craftsmen worked for 6 years, 7 days a week (in shifts, of course) to finish the inlay-work, plaster-carving, gold-leaving (leafing? This Wide World: 47 weird foods we have eaten in Morocco
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/47-weird-foods-we-have-eaten-in-morocco.html
47 weird foods we have eaten in Morocco. 1 egg, potato, and eggplant sandwich. 2 potato, eggplant, and enormous chili pepper sandwich. 3 huge round flaky bendy grease bread. 6 veggie couscous with raisins, because those are vegetables. 7 yogurt in a glass. 8 enormous rotisserie chicken dinners with fries, rice, lentil soup, weird sour vegetable soup with olives, hot sauce, and bread. 10 Poms drink (the weirdest, most undesirable apple juice you will ever try). 11 Schweppes lemonade, which is yummy. 41 yo...
This Wide World: Rome (finally)
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/09/rome-finally.html
So I know I haven't posted in ages and ages- sorry- but Italy was fantastic, really a whirlwind of goodness, and I just loved Rome in particular. I absolutely must go back. In the meantime, here I am in New Haven, where I have unceremoniously become a student once again. Oh, also, because it was a Sunday, I got to watch (and hear) services. Holy goodness. Can you possibly imagine being the organist at Saint Peter's? I also watched a Swiss guard faint from standing too still for too long, and I noted to m...
This Wide World: The New World Must Have Invented City Planning
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/08/new-world-must-have-invented-city.html
The New World Must Have Invented City Planning. Which brings me to another fun thing I did in Rabat recently, and about which I completely forgot: I went to a rock concert. This Wide World: rocks
http://thiswideworld.blogspot.com/2007/07/rocks.html
Petra Is. Awesome. You know that part in Indiana Jones, where Indy sees the facade of the Treasury at Petra through the crack in the rocks? It seems all big-blockbuster-filmed up. But it isn't. In real life, it's not every bit as good as in the movies- it is, in fact, much better. I mean it. I just don't know how you can carve a facade so high up. Ladders? Steps in the rock which you later carve away? Both seem insufficiently dependable. My father and I went. Without seeing anybody else. I don't beli...
