Oak Creek Angler

Sunday, May 20, 2012. Rim fishing part 2, May 2012. I finished up my "work and play" trip by revisiting the creek that I had fished a couple days earlier, but this time headed further downstream where the water cuts into some truly rugged country, in search of a few seldom-visited trout. I hiked down a side wash from a bluff dotted with prickly pear, and soon found myself surrounded by vivid multicolored cliffs and emerald streamside vegetation hugging the precious cool water. I brought another chub to h...

Oak Creek Angler: April 2012

http://oakcreekangler.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 30, 2012. To keep a fish, April 2012. Spring arrives late to many of Arizona's mid to high elevation trout streams, especially those passing through canyon reaches. Looming rock walls essentially act as refrigerators, enveloping landscapes below in cooler temperatures early and late in the season. My outlook on the day diminished a bit after finding a few of these kept fish, and I began bracing for additional sizable trout lying lifeless in the shallows with each new likely pool I approached.

Oak Creek Angler: March 2012

http://oakcreekangler.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 30, 2012. After the flood, Oak Creek, March 2012. One of the most significant storms of the season moved through northern Arizona in the middle of March, depositing much-needed snowpack on the landscape over several days. Once the snow began to melt, runoff and swollen waterways inevitably followed, with heavy turbid flows present in streams, including Oak Creek. I prospected through several sections and runs in search of active trout, and while I only encountered a few fish, they were heft...

Oak Creek Angler: February 2010

http://oakcreekangler.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 5, 2010. Rio Grande Country, February 2010. The hike into the Gorge measured over a mile in distance, dropping quickly in elevation (not too difficult on the way down, but more strenuous on the return trip back up and out), and immediately provided some impressive views of the Rio Grande cutting through rugged country, along with the Red River near the confluence of the two waterways, as shown above. These two flies accounted for most of the fish I hooked, and the few that I managed to a...

Oak Creek Angler: January 2010

http://oakcreekangler.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 8, 2010. Oak Creek, January 2010. Winter can be a fickle time for fly fishing in many watersheds, and dependent on the whims of the weather. Oak Creek proved no different in this regard during January, and I tried to make the most of windows of mild, sunny days wedged between snowstorms. I caught two other fish on this particular day, and they were both memorable in part because they came from likely runs that have not yielded trout for me in the past. I made my way to another deeper run,...

Oak Creek Angler: February 2012

http://oakcreekangler.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Oak Creek, Winter 2012. One of the great benefits of living in the Southwest is the ability to enjoy the outdoors in mild and pleasant weather during the winter, a quality that can ring particularly true in regards to fly fishing. This 16" female brown was notable as one of my first fish caught from Oak Creek for the year, and representing a new downstream extent for me for a wild trout brought to hand. The fish was a typical beauty, and a fine way to usher in the season&#...

Christmas was good to me… | Arizona Wanderings

https://azwanderings.wordpress.com/2010/12/27/christmas-was-good-to-me

Christmas was good to me…. December 27, 2010 in Fly Fishing. Much needed upgrade for the 3 weight. As an avid reader, my Amazon wish list grows almost every time I am on the computer. This selection shows a heavy influence of John Gierach but also a Walt Prothero wild card showed up (arguably one of my favorite authors). My sister-in-law went above and beyond to make the perfect gift for a helpless fly fisherman and reader. This bookmark will definitely be utilized in my marathon of reading ahead. I do n...

Furled leaders and a few early gifts…. December 24, 2010 in Fly Fishing. Drying Station - Front. Bo also is stating to make his own fly fishing lanyards and as we were talking I mentioned my minimalistic approach to fly fishing, Bo quickly whipped up a perfect “belt hook” for some summer fishing. I think this lanyard would work well for those warm days wet wading in the small streams of Arizona. A big thanks to Bo for his hospitality and gifts. Keeping track of my better half…. More to come…. I am by no means an accomplished fly tier, but I had several requests to post the flies that I tie and have been successful with in Arizona. Due to the fact that I lose flies like a madman, I use flies that are all relatively easy to tie and only basic materials are needed. Enjoy….
