Jul 10, 2015. The Colors of Mexico. By: Verena Dalati Salmé. My recent trip to Mexico City was as inspiring as it was relaxing. The locals were friendly, the food was delicious, and the history was rich. Among the art, museums, and regional traditions I experienced, there was one overarching theme I couldn’t ignore: COLOR! From painted buildings to artisan creations, unique color palettes were created by ordinary items in brilliant hues. 3 Traditional dress detail, photo courtesy of Guy Salmé. Designed b...

Tihar: Nepal’s Festival of Lights. Aug 05, 2016. The end of October marks an incredible festival in Nepal called Tihar. Five years ago I got to witness this beautiful celebration in person in Katmandu, and it was truly an amazing experience. Dogs, cows, and homes were adorned with marigold garlands and lit up at night with candles, creating a breathtaking atmosphere. Photo courtesy of Blaine Harrington Photography. Mrs Martin's Art Room. Printmaking with 5th Grade: Collagraphs. To begin, we looked at Romare Bearden's collages which have beautiful, thick textures, discussing the subject matter and technique of collage. I then showed my students my own collagraphs and plates, and we discussed how and why they were made. We made connections that collagraphs are collages used for printmaking. A big thanks to Lauren Pfeiffenberger of Dali's Moustache. Kindergarten: Where the Wild Things Are. Fourth grade students viewed...

Gessokids: Mexican Animalitos
http://www.gessokids.com/2013/06/mexican-animalitos.html
Tuesday, June 11, 2013. 5th grade "traveled" to Mexico earlier this year and learned about Oaxacan wood carvers and their beautiful and whimsical animal carvings. These remarkable wood carvings are also known as alebrijes. For their similarity with the fantastic paper creatures made in Mexico City. We made ours out of air-dry clay. And painted them with acrylics. I absolutely love how they turned out! I wanted to keep many of them for my own. If you want to see some of the real things, click here.
