Sekolah ini dibuka pada 27 April 1958 dan dinamakan Sekolah Pertukangan Luar Bandar untuk memberi peluang kepada pelajar di negeri Pulau Pinang yang telah tamat darjah 6 untuk menjalani " Ilmu Pertukangan Kayu dan Logam " . Kumpulan pertama seramai 50 orang menjalani latihan ini yang dikelolakan oleh 5 orang guru. SMTBw boleh menampung bilangan pelajar seramai 600 orang.
