Wrote two guest posts for Conscious Entities. Blog The blog is entirely devoted to the topic of consciousness problems, theories, concepts, ideas, all there is to it. The blog is run by Peter Hankins, author of a book about the subject. The Shadow of Consciousness (A Little Less Wrong). And tagged computational theory of mind. What are the...

Predictions from Complex Mind Theory: Understanding and confusion | Observing Ideas

https://observingideas.wordpress.com/2015/01/20/predictions-from-complex-mind-theory-understanding-and-confusion

Thinking about mind, consciousness, ethics and the world in general and in fundamental. Predictions from Complex Mind Theory: Understanding and confusion. Mind is a complex dynamical system of mental events that happen in the brain. How can we characterize important mental phenomena in this framework, such as understanding. What prediction can we derive from a theory of the mind founded on complexity science, more specifically as it relates to these mental phenomena? Sporns, 2010). Self-organization.

Prediction – Expectation – Anticipation | Observing Ideas

Thinking about mind, consciousness, ethics and the world in general and in fundamental. In this post I tackle some problems concerning the capacities of predicting future events and performing actions based on these predictions. What is prediction in the mind? How does it come about? What are the necessary mental faculties that allow for predicting future events? How does prediction relate to other mental phenomena such as understanding and simulation. Which most of the posts on this blog are about.

Thinking about mind, consciousness, ethics and the world in general and in fundamental. Free Energy Principle – A quick look and some concerns. The blogosphere is humming about Free Energy Principle an interesting and general take on brain function that sees the brain as performing only one task: maintaining proper homeostasis of the organism through the good use of an internal model of the environment. What does this theory purports to be? What problems and concerns can be identified with this approach?

Lucid Dreaming or Dreaming That You’re Dreaming? | The Brains Blog

http://philosophyofbrains.com/2015/08/04/lucid-dreaming-or-dreaming-that-youre-dreaming.aspx

Featured Scholar: Evan Thompson. Lucid Dreaming or Dreaming That You’re Dreaming? August 4, 2015. Why isn’t a lucid dream just a dream within a dream? Suppose I’m having a flying dream and I think, I must be dreaming. I’m in a dream state, so why I am not just dreaming that I’m dreaming? To put the question another way, if there’s a difference between knowing you’re dreaming and dreaming you’re dreaming, then what exactly is it? Thirty years ago Daniel Dennett posed the following challenge:. In the hypna...

Ruminations on mind and language. Sam Harris and his Mysterian Sympathies. February 15, 2015. March 25, 2015. Here’s a quote I’ve seen popping up a lot recently, taken from Sam Harris’ most recent book Waking Up (p116):. What don’t we understand? Consciousness = the lawful product of unconscious information processing. Consciousness, then we have reason to believe that the above identity is false. If we are not sure what sorts of things the lawful products of information processing might be, then in ...

Does Computation Require Representation? | The Brains Blog

http://philosophyofbrains.com/2015/08/11/does-computation-require-representation.aspx

Gualtiero Piccinini: Physical Computation. Does Computation Require Representation? August 11, 2015. This semantic view of computation, popular as it may be, doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. The mechanistic account of computation attempts to give an adequate account of physical computation, which does justice to the practices of the computational sciences, without requiring that computations manipulate representations and without falling into pancomputationalism. Before concluding this post, I’d lik...

First, the paragraph from my previous post that this person/demon/interdimensional entity commented on:. 8220;I have a huge problem with these statements. Who says science will self-correct? Maybe certain false-positive findings will be left alone and no-one will investigate them any further. At that point you have an incorrect scientific record. Our unde...

ON THE WAY TO GREECE. Posted by judith zinis. Asymp; 1 Comment. I put on big sunglasses and armed with my iphone readied myself to be a “citizen journalist.” I had tried to do the same this summer during the elections in Spetses. Observing Kindness

Friday, June 12, 2015. Listening to stories and legends in Prague. Due to the influence of the ruling Austro-Hungarian empire, that ruled all 3 countries, the bigger and more decorated the building, the better. Where are the stories of kindness in all this? Over and over, in dangerous and miserable conditions, some brave people risked ther lives for their neighbours. I have heard stories of pluck and good luck. The buildings are pretty, but many of the people are beautiful and brave. Friday, June 5, 2015.
