The Occasional Review

Wednesday, August 23, 2017. Dark Mountain Anthology Published. For several years now, I have published most of my writing with the Dark Mountain group in England. I suppose it doesn't make much sense as a publishing decision. They can't afford to pay authors anything yet, and the issues are mainly distributed in England, so very few people I knew could read them. I was sure, though, from the first time I read the Dark Mountain manifesto - and then Paul Kingsnorth's essays. Anyway, please buy the book....

The Occasional Review: Ask the Dust, by John Fante

http://occasionalreview.blogspot.com/2008/10/ask-dust-by-john-fante.html

Sunday, October 12, 2008. Ask the Dust, by John Fante. I was on a plane when I came across Robert Towne's film of Ask the Dust. Here's what I mean. Arturo is obviously attracted to Camilla, and she essentially offers herself to him on several occasions, but what could have been glorious or at least reasonably satisfying sexual encounters dissolve into fury and abuse and violence, for no reason that I could make out. Eventually, despite being unable to touch Camilla except in rage, Bandini declares that h...

The Occasional Review: War with the Newts, by Karel Čapek

http://occasionalreview.blogspot.com/2013/06/war-with-newts-by-karel-capek.html

Saturday, June 22, 2013. War with the Newts, by Karel Čapek. This review appeared first on the Dark Mountain blog. But it fits with what I usually publish here, so I thought I would post it again. Robert Wechsler, who publishes the novel as well as several other excellent volumes of Czech literature in translation, did point out in the comments that Čapek's last novel, which I thought had never made it to English, was completed by his wife and published in 1941 as. Under the direction of a syndicate, hug...

The Occasional Review: The Little Virtues, by Natalia Ginzburg

http://occasionalreview.blogspot.com/2009/01/little-virtues-by-natalia-ginzburg.html

Sunday, January 11, 2009. The Little Virtues, by Natalia Ginzburg. The more intense the better. The essay that first captured me was He and I. Included in Philip Lopate’s wonderful anthology of the personal essay. It is about Ginzburg’s long marriage. Here are the first few paragraphs:. He always feels hot, I always feel cold. In the summer when it is really hot he does nothing but complain about how hot he feels. He is irritated if he sees me put a jumper on the evening. Many years before they were toge...

The Occasional Review: The Beggar Maid, by Alice Munro

http://occasionalreview.blogspot.com/2009/03/beggar-maid-by-alice-munro.html

Monday, March 09, 2009. The Beggar Maid, by Alice Munro. There is a widespread consensus in North America that Alice Munro is among the best living writers in English. Jonathan Franzen’s impassioned and silly defense of her work. Came after Munro's last collection had already been on the bestseller list, and long after most readers I know had felt compelled to read at least some of her work. I have read maybe twenty of her stories – most from the big Selected. Volume and the Hateship. I say misleading be...

The Occasional Review: Ensouling Language, by Stephen Harrod Buhner

http://occasionalreview.blogspot.com/2010/05/ensouling-language-by-stephen-harrod.html

Friday, May 07, 2010. Ensouling Language, by Stephen Harrod Buhner. To leave your waste is “a sin against God and humanity,” he writes. Even in this tiny pamphlet, he is trying to bring about “the restoration of the holy to everyday life,” using a subject that most of us have no inclination to think about. He then quotes from how-to books like James Krenov’s The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking. Although it never struck me as important before, I noticed once that many of my favorite writers had a sense that con...

redplanet: Nirvana day

http://pulangplaneta.blogspot.com/2015/06/nirvana-day.html

Chronicling thoughts at the edge of consciousness. Sunday, June 21, 2015. So what's next after today? Well, perhaps it's a Grunge Month. I've already downloaded several iconic albums from the era. Some creative energy starting to flow back through these old brain cells, made stagnant by the daily grind at the office and this most recent bout of depression and insecurities. Mind, bathed in loud and sludgy music, urging the body to rock on. Image courtesy of Wikipedia). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Chronicling thoughts at the edge of consciousness. Friday, September 21, 2012. Red dust of illusion. Ma Jian's Red Dust A Path Through China. Brought back all those painful and cruel memories of being slapped hard on the cheeks. Every sensation has vanished save for this loud and piercing ringing in one's ears. And with this sweet numbness on your face came a growing awareness of one's mortality. Pain as a precursor to that eternal sleep. One of these days . Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://pulangplaneta.blogspot.com/2012/09/back-to-blogging.html

Chronicling thoughts at the edge of consciousness. Saturday, September 29, 2012. Guess the only decision point remaining now is whether to allow these advertisements and make some money out of the activity. Or just keep the whole blog ad-free and maintain a modicum of privacy, albeit with a little tweak on the content to make it more relevant to the community. Produce some public value so to speak. Be a real citizen. In any event, we're finally back to blogging folks. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

redplanet: Saved by a fairy tale

http://pulangplaneta.blogspot.com/2015/06/saved-by-fairy-tale.html

Chronicling thoughts at the edge of consciousness. Sunday, June 28, 2015. Saved by a fairy tale. Was about to leave my favorite secondhand book shop, at peace with the fact that I won't be making any purchase, when my eyes happened to catch this slim volume inserted among those stacks of pocket books. Turned out to be a 1974 Farrar, Straus and Giroux reprinting of Hermann Hesse's Strange News from Another Star. An early collection of eight short stories which initially appeared in 1919 as M. Until he met...

Chronicling thoughts at the edge of consciousness. Tuesday, April 22, 2008. Mind haunts a place. 8211; Filipino term for a mature woman, like an older sister or an aunt. Google confirmed an initial hunch: Manang belongs to the ficus. Genus, with around 800 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, and epiphytes (organisms that grow attached to living plants). Filipinos call this particular tree variety balete. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

The Occasional Rod

Welcome to my web site! At least what there is of it. It would be easier to buy a rod down at the local Wally World. Maybe even spend a few more bucks and buy a rod from a local fly shop. I know I've got the cost of at least three quality bamboo rods in tools and such already. But that's not the point is it? From time to time I'll try to post information here that would be of interest. Status reports of the journey. Maybe even try to sell a couple rods. Who knows? Ugg outlet, cheap real uggs.
