Since January 2015 legislation limits the sulphur content of marine fuel to 0.1% in Emissions Control Areas. Ship owners either have to switch to more expensive fuel or fit exhaust gas scrubbers. The graph alongside illustrates the annual cost burden of switching to marine gas oil from high sulphur fuel oil. Ships fitted with scrubbers can continue to burn high sulphur fuel oil and so avoid the cost and potentially gain competitive advantage. Registered in England Number 7042633.

Maritime transport has long been regarded as an environmentally friendly means of transporting large volumes of trade globally. Whilst other sectors have been the focus of legislation and lobbying the industry has broadly prospered and indeed sea freight has seen large increases for many years. There are currently three Emissions Control Areas(ECA) active, the Baltic Sea and North Sea, with the third, the North American ECA extending up to 200 miles from the coast. Sea water scrubbing is the process by which sulphur and particulates are removed from exhaust gases by post combustion intimate mixing with sea water. Oceanox’s patented technology for this process is called the Ecobox. Principles of open loop scrubbing. Oceanox's current project is fitting open loop scrubbers to two conventional ferries. The chosen scrubbers are vertical and replace the vessels.
