Today's walk to see the wild tree proved to be a voyage of discovery. The few rains we have had during July have altered the landscape in many ways. The first surprise was finding a couple of blooms of Desert Poppy open. at last! These marvelous wildflowers (Kallstroemia grandiflora, see my post from last year.

The Handmaker's World: November 2015
http://www.thehandmakersworld.net/2015_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 21, 2015. Here are three pieces inspired by classical Greek pottery, though none is a direct copy. One detail is that each is characterized by a trefoil or quatrefoil lip, sometimes used on the classical Oinochoes. The pitcher is a graceful form at its best. This one has a slightly narrowed neck and flared rim which is then indented to create a functional pour spout. The marks made by the wooden rib can be clearly seen where the clay is pressed inward. Note: The fabric used as backgrou...

The Handmaker's World: February 2016

Saturday, February 20, 2016. Testing the New Clay. Unfired piece created yesterday and now drying. Working with a small batch of clay, in which I am testing both an increase of 35 mesh fireclay and the use of black iron oxide to darken the color. As for the color, the fire will tell; and for that I must wait until the piece has dried sufficiently! In the meantime, I will continue to experiment with this batch as I rather liked the working properties. Sunday, February 7, 2016. Fresh From the Fire 1.

The Handmaker's World: May 2016

Thursday, May 5, 2016. Recent work, unfired earthenware vase. I am finally making some progress again with the techniques involved in coil-built pottery. For a while it seemed as if I was getting nowhere, actually losing ground when I attempted to push the technical boundaries. My latest vase is much more controlled, and now I look forward to the next! The other is footage of a workshop with Mata Ortiz master potter Jerardo Tena. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). The Handmaker's World: January 2016

Friday, January 8, 2016. Tuesday, January 5, 2016. Saturday, January 2, 2016. Glaze in the Making. The first full glaze test (and a small one, at that) is out of the kiln. While I have walked round and round the glaze options for the new earthenware clay, the slow thought has payed off in one respect, with a correctly melting and apparently usable glaze right from the first trial. In the meantime, I am back at work with the clay after an enforced break over part of November and half of December. Chee...

The Handmaker's World: December 2015

Wednesday, December 23, 2015. Using one of my earthenware pots for the Christmas flowers. This pot was one of a series made last summer, wheelthrown and entirely unglazed. The rings created by the movement of fingers in wet clay are all left visible, especially along the shoulder. Wishing all a happy Christmas! Thursday, December 10, 2015. The Handmaker's World: September 2015
http://www.thehandmakersworld.net/2015_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 27, 2015. So here they are: my first three pots made using the coiling method. The initial attempt was, not surprisingly, a complete failure, but it was extremely useful as it revealed the main areas to be focused on. But I did end up with a pot. A rather lumpy piece, but the goal was achieved, along with learning to work with the requirements imposed by crafting the base in my mould. The next piece was a continuation of the same aim; it also played with a more complex form. I wish I co...
