Earthship Tasmania

Monday, 17 August 2015. Putting on the roof. It is April 2015 and I am here again to get the roof on, I have one week and some help so if the weather is kind to us we might just make it. Tassie oak decking covering the rafters as we left it back in Dec 2014. The Decking has survived the rain but the tarps we nailed on look to have blown away a long time ago (did I mention the winds we get here? And the rear of the earthship is waterlogged but we are here to fix all that so let's get stuck in! Eventually ...

Natural building: December 2014

http://www.offgriddevelopments.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Monday, 29 December 2014. November Workshop Part IV. Click here to see Part I. Bozwell and Tommy Dee size up the keystone. The third and final week saw lot's of innovation and experimentation, the retaining wall for the berm was getting bigger, we used a bus tyre as a kind of a key stone to tie everything together at the flag wall junction and we used lots of hooping iron to tie our plating down onto the tyre courses below. Plywood backing blocks for extra strength. Many hands make light work. With all t...

Natural building: An Earthship journal PART I

Saturday, 3 May 2014. An Earthship journal PART I. Since I can remember I have had the urge to build a house of some description but the years and life can grind away an ambitious child's fancy. so here I am in my early forties and I am about to embark, for better or worse. On that fateful voyage. What better vessel for such an undertaking than an Earthship? Recycling tyres, bottles, cans and yes. Dreams! Bamboo huts in Auroville, India. Raising one of the bamboo frame walls. Racking my brains to come up...

Natural building: Tyre pounding with Mike

http://www.offgriddevelopments.blogspot.com/2014/04/tyre-pounding-with-mike.html

Sunday, 6 April 2014. Tyre pounding with Mike. After I pounded my third tyre in Guatemala I started thinking. couldn't we just use bricks? Feeling a little disenchanted with the whole "let's recycle 600 car tyres" idea I suddenly found myself standing next to Mr Mike Reynolds and he was. you guessed it! Racking my brains to come up with something nonchalant to say to the Man, I heard myself proclaim ". I can't believe your'e still doing this shit". To which he replied ". What could I say to that! The Lor...

Two Wheeled Texan: September 2014

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 26, 2014. El Ascenso de Cerro Moreno. As you can see below, Antofagasta has unique geography because it is situated narrowly between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains. While this stretch of the Andes lacks the lush greenery that the Andes are known for, the surrounding montanitas or cerros (small mountains) provide a sharp change in elevation as you head inland. The northern view from Cerro Moreno was slightly obscured due to the fact that we were above the lower cloud level&#46...

Two Wheeled Texan: July 2014

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 21, 2014. I thought it prudent. Further down the beach we finally managed to ditch the crowds and find a bit of sand for ourselves. T...

Two Wheeled Texan: March 2010

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 19, 2010. These are the triple clamps that I designed for my Triumph Speed triple when fitting it with GSXR Forks. The finished project is shown below. All machining was done on a Tormach PCNC1100 at Z-Bot LLC. Powdercoating done by MetalInk. Both upper and lower clamps were machined from 6061-T6 Al while the steering pin was made from 7075-T6. I will add pictures of the machining process later tonight. The final upper clamp was modified for weight and came out great. Life of an Architect.

Two Wheeled Texan: October 2014

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 16, 2014. Pisco Elqui, Elqui Valley. If you are fortunate enough to land in the early evening hours you may enjoy the same sunset that we did: one that set the mountains ablaze. Once in Pisco Elqui, I would highly recommend lodging in the Balcones de Pisco Elqui. Pisco Elqui is located in the heart of the Elqui valley and provides a great basecamp for walking (or renting cheap bicycles and cycling) along the valley. Chile is the largest pisco producer (and consumer) in the world. Al...

Two Wheeled Texan: Bodyboarding en La Cupula

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014/10/bodyboarding-en-la-cupula.html

Monday, October 13, 2014. Bodyboarding en La Cupula. One of the most well known local waves is called the Cupula. Every year a worldwide competition called the mundial. A short, fast wave, closes quickly to the left almost on top of the reef. Once in, there's barely enough time to turn left before you have to turn around or dive through the wave. With just over a year in the water, Julian was quickly mastering the local waves. Wave slayer of the day. Slightly less than graceful. And a quick exit.

Two Wheeled Texan: December 2013

Thursday, December 5, 2013. Un Partido de Futbol. Tal vez recuerdas cuando dije que futbal es vida. bueno, Chile es no excepcion. One of my good friends from work surprised me on Friday by saying "Paul, manana vamos a un partido de futbal. No preguntas." He wouldn't tell me who was playing, or where it was, just that I should wear blue and to be at his place by 4. Because he's not actually a sanctioned mascot. He's just a die hard fan that has been at every single game for the last 13 years, accordin...

Two Wheeled Texan: August 2014

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 26, 2014. After surviving the fire of Valparaiso, we jumped on a bus and headed to Santiago. One of the best options for lodging in Santiago is an Aparthotel. Real estate moguls purchase apartments and rent them out by the night to tourists at a modest rate for both parties. We ended up paying $90/night at Lastarria Santiago Suite. We set out the first afternoon to traipse around the park and found ourselves slowly making our way up the hill. At the very top of the 15 million year old vol...

Two Wheeled Texan: Iquique - Tierra de Campeones

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014/10/iquique-tierra-de-campeones.html

Friday, October 3, 2014. Iquique - Tierra de Campeones. Four hundred and nineteen kilometers to the north lies Iquique. Why buses still run this route when a flight with Lan costs the same, I still do not know; but, for $20.000 CLP per person (ida y vuelta), you can fly from Antofagasta to Iquique in just under 45 minutes. We headed up the (locally) renowned boardwalk. Just inland of the coast, anyone interested in the history and architecture of the city should search out Calle Baquedano. This pedes...

Two Wheeled Texan: Coloso for the day

http://twowheeledtexan.blogspot.com/2014/10/coloso-for-day.html

Tuesday, October 7, 2014. Coloso for the day. After hearing about all of the delicious seafood to be found in Coloso, a little town about 15 minutes down the coast from Antofagasta, we decided to take our faithful stead, Esteban, and our new canine companion, Kiara, on an adventure. No more than 500 meters further we came across the most common Chilean sign that I have seen here: "Fin Camino." That's the end of the road Jack. As we continued south, the landscape did not cease to awe. Based on the abundan...
