Offsetting Behaviour: The J-curve: science versus politics

https://offsettingbehaviour.blogspot.com/2010/08/j-curve-science-versus-politics.html

Friday, 6 August 2010. The J-curve: science versus politics. In the LA Times. Peele goes on to note that it's no longer the religious right that's providing the anti-science opposition; rather, it's the public healthists who've taken arms against the 2010 guidelines' noting. Of additional benefits of moderate drinking. And so it's fun to have a flip through the Kiwi equivalent. The New Zealand Food and Nutrition Guidelines for Older People. For middle aged and older people. It should be noted that these ...

Offsetting Behaviour: Court philosophers

https://offsettingbehaviour.blogspot.com/2010/05/court-philosophers_20.html

Thursday, 20 May 2010. At a philosophy seminar last week, the speaker argued claims that "taxation is theft" are nonsensical because property rights are defined legislatively as a social construct: consequently, taxation can never be theft because the property was never yours to begin with. You only held rights subject to the constraint that some of the property would be taken by the state. Is there an argument for "taxation isn't theft" that doesn't also support "Droit du Seigneur isn't rape"? Either on...

Offsetting Behaviour: Transfusions and operating room ethics

https://offsettingbehaviour.blogspot.com/2010/05/transfusions-and-operating-room-ethics.html

Tuesday, 4 May 2010. Transfusions and operating room ethics. So I was chatting with the anaesthesiologist during Susan's caesarean section this morning (while peering over the shield to boggle at what all was going on over on the other side). There was some risk that Sue might wind up needing a transfusion as things got a bit complicated. Note: Stress and nervous tension are now serious social problems in all parts of the Galaxy. Me: So, that would take too long then? Her: Well, it's a complicated issue&...

Offsetting Behaviour: In which the masthead is explained, and homage is paid unto Tullock

https://offsettingbehaviour.blogspot.com/2009/04/in-which-masthead-is-explained-and.html

Friday, 24 April 2009. In which the masthead is explained, and homage is paid unto Tullock. Don Boudreaux reminds us of the greatness of Gordon Tullock. Sometimes, students would deny that they drive more recklessly when wearing a seatbelt. Tullock liked to illustrate the idea of offsetting behaviour for them by asking what they'd do if a large spike extended from the steering wheel and pointed directly at their heart. And see also here. The italics are for added ominous intonation). I later ran into him...

Offsetting Behaviour: Reputational spill-overs: semen beer edition

https://offsettingbehaviour.blogspot.com/2015/08/reputational-spill-overs-semen-beer.html

Thursday, 6 August 2015. Reputational spill-overs: semen beer edition. Some sharks shouldn't be jumped. This may be one. The Green Man pub on Victoria St is about to launch a stag semen "milked" stout, created by brewery Choice Bros and timed to celebrate the lead-up to Beervana. With an added measure of "export-quality" deer semen, the secret ingredient may induce gag reflexes in some but pub co-owner Steve Drummond was confident in the brew's success. The donor stag's name was "Lagoon", if that matters.

Offsetting Behaviour

Wednesday, 11 April 2018. The Heckman Curve is flat. It sounded good in theory. Interventions targeted at youths could very plausibly have been rather more effective than programmes targeted at older cohorts. Heckman's foundation thing made a pretty infographic about it. But it's fundamentally an empirical question. The infographic is based rather more on intuition than on any real lit survey. Rea and Burton checked it out. Here are the key tables. It also links into my other worries. Links to this post.
