For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses
Of Winds and Water: January 2015
http://ofwindsandwater.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. January. Was. Exhausting. But the party's not over yet. Finish making more raised beds. I've got three built, now it's time to place them, fill them and plant them. They all cost a pittance, too, because we got the lumber from the nearly dead cart. Make a bunch of tshirts. Hum. I started. They didn't go so well. I'll do more. Begin two more Coursera. Classes. Done and done. We have visitors coming. On February 1. Dirt ne...
Of Winds and Water: Mint Iced Tea + World Record Sweet Tea
http://ofwindsandwater.blogspot.com/2015/06/mint-iced-tea-world-record-sweet-tea.html
Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. Mint Iced Tea World Record Sweet Tea. My garden is starting to get out of control. Well, maybe not the garden so much as the mint. I am starting to think it was not such a great idea to plant the mint in my herb garden - I should have planted it far, far away from everything so that when it started multiplying like rabbits (well, not exactly. Like rabbits) it wouldn't interfere with the rosemary or lime-basil. If you thi...
Of Winds and Water: Camping Weekend
http://ofwindsandwater.blogspot.com/2015/06/camping-weekend.html
Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. We had big plans for spending Memorial weekend in Savannah after spending a night camping with the bus club. Well.we never made it past the campsite. Savannah will be there anytime, but great weekends with great people don't happen often enough! When we first arrived at the site, we met some bus owners nursing a 4 week old kitten! Roughly half the photos I took were of this guy:. Last but not least, plenty of relaxation.
Of Winds and Water: April 2015

Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. Right after we got the engine put back together. And then figured out how to solve our vacuum leak problems. We still had one lingering issue that we could NOT figure out. The rest of the story. Kyle's mom and brother have been staying with us this week, and one of the highlights of their visit has been a fishing trip! Our fresh catch has been on the dinner table in different forms this week, starting with fish tacos.
Of Winds and Water: August 2015
http://ofwindsandwater.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. Kyle and I were separated by a thousand miles for three weeks. In a desperate attempt to keep him a little closer, I asked him to send me a selfie every day. I really should have seen this coming, but he agreed only on the condition that I do the same. As much as I hate to say it, it did make the whole thing a little easier. And I think we both got better at taking selfies. The really fun thing about buswork is that hour...

. . . CABIN NOTES: The Week of the 4th
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2012/07/week-of-4th.html
Life on the Water. Sunday, July 8, 2012. The Week of the 4th. Oh what a Fourth of July week we had! As with much of the eastern seaboard, we were having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave. Aren't you glad you cannot hear me croon? Last weekend, our friends Pat and Judy went to sleep late due to the heat and humidity on the Chesapeake. They woke early (0100) due to the 50 knot straight line winds that began to drag their anchor. It was the same storm that damaged the DC area. Courtesy Carol E.). Note teal ...
. . . CABIN NOTES: Tidbits
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2012/06/tidbits.html
Life on the Water. Sunday, June 24, 2012. Summer is not a time for lengthy projects. It is a time to get done what needs doing with as small a burst of energy as possible. Even so, effort equals extreme sweat. Time for the pool. And meals that are more hors d'oeuvres than entrees. In short, a season of tidbits all around. When Steve and Lynn visited on Celebration. Sundowner edibles aboard Celebration. The set of the sails illustrates how unpredictable the wind. Thunderstorm passes the point. Blackwater ...
. . . CABIN NOTES: Sail Blog: The Beginning
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2011/06/sail-blog-beginning-060311.html
Life on the Water. Saturday, June 4, 2011. Sail Blog: The Beginning. Once, when I was between colleges, I decided I needed to buy a Hobie 16 catamaran. I persuaded my father to go in for half the cost even though he had never sailed. We picked up our new boat behind Marsh’s Surf Shop on the causeway from Morehead City to Atlantic Beach. The folks at Marsh’s launched the boat in the canal behind the shop. What was I thinking? June 6, 2011 at 8:42 AM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Week of the 4th.
. . . CABIN NOTES: Post-Irene Post
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2011/09/post-irene-post.html
Life on the Water. Saturday, September 3, 2011. Since my last post, we have moved. Back to her slip in Oriental Harbor Marina, one of the few still intact on A Dock, mainly to be closer to our friends. None of the docks have power nor will they for some weeks as the surge entirely submerged the power pylons. We watched the Towboat US crew raise. Free would aim toward the slip adjacent to ours, then swiftly accelerate. If the captain had not been aimed away from us when the tow lines snapped, he would...
. . . CABIN NOTES: Bon Voyage Lowena
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2011/11/bon-voyage-lowena.html
Life on the Water. Saturday, November 19, 2011. Tony and Jenny on. Tony and Jenny are British. She hails from the south, he from the north. While the differences in the UK are different from our regional differences in the US, the dynamic is similar. Tony bought. Personally, I lusted after the granny bars with thole pins and the boom gallows, original to. But practical additions to any boat. Was re-powered with a Beta that purrs softly when turned on. After a few months in Whittaker Creek, they moved...
. . . CABIN NOTES: The End
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-end.html
Life on the Water. Thursday, February 12, 2015. Rather than string along with weak tales from the land, I have decided to mothball the blog as it was before we moved ashore. Nature as surrounded by it. It has been great fun to write for the past four years because I found good topics to feed the posts. It does not seem that way so much now, and most of my readers seem to mine the archives. I hope we sail some this year and, if we do, I will likely write new posts. March 22, 2015 at 7:31 PM.
part II, Traveling Light:: Casa Quirky
http://sailcelebration.blogspot.com/2015/02/casa-quirky.html
Part II, Traveling Light:. Where we go off to see the world, sailing on other people's boats. Meanwhile, a company that had been contracted months ago to clean up the house and yard before the auction, showed up and took all the trash, brush, old appliances, AND the crap-pile outdoor kitchen! How much stuff could there possibly be, you ask? It took 3 guys almost 4 days. We saw them at the house when they were working, but didn't happen mention that the auction had already taken place. 3/8/15, 11:26 AM.
. . . CABIN NOTES: Still Summer, Still Hot
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2014/09/still-summer-still-hot.html
Life on the Water. Friday, September 5, 2014. Still Summer, Still Hot. August and Labor Day are behind us, but it remains stunningly hot. And humid. Worse than any stretch of days during the summer months just past. Occasional breezes, but not consistent enough to keep us cool. Noted in a previous post. Near Edward, a blink of a crossroad west of Aurora, itself not much more than a blink of a town that has left its best days behind, but still boasts the Aurora Fossil Museum. A shadow to block the sun?
. . . CABIN NOTES: A Tribute to writer Randy Wayne White
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-tribute-to-writer-randy-wayne-white.html
Life on the Water. Sunday, June 2, 2013. A Tribute to writer Randy Wayne White. I just finished reading Randy Wayne White's latest novel, Night Moves. Twentieth in his Doc Ford series. I think it is his best. What is the plot of this one? I stumbled across one of his novels, not his best I now know, then backtracked to start at the beginning. Not essential, but a sensible way to read his work. Try RWW if you like saltwater and good tales well told. I cannot read enough of his work. June 3, 2013 at 2:52 PM.
. . . CABIN NOTES: Bear Island
http://cabinnotesatsea.blogspot.com/2012/04/bear-island.html
Life on the Water. Sunday, April 29, 2012. Blazing paddle over green water. Paddling with Lennon (Cameron). East end bluff and tidal slough. Camp at base of dunes. Sand bowl in the interior dunes. Cactus on the island. Cameron impaled above his achilles. Burrfish, a kind of puffer. Fiddler crab in cap. Close-up of fiddler claw. Things to stay the same. May 3, 2012 at 9:05 AM. Sounds like a terrific trip (except for the no-see-ums and lack of propane). May 4, 2012 at 3:04 PM. May 4, 2012 at 4:54 PM. Camer...

Not about whether the book is now outdated given the emergence of other ways to distract oneself, other information technologies- must the book be reduced to those categories? How are we opened up to other times, other perceptions (are these one and the same thing? From the Black Sun. The most beautiful collection of reader meditations i have come across over the years.

Of Winds and Water
Of Winds and Water. For that rare breed of people who like tasty foods and VW buses. This post has moved. I never do any Black Friday shopping - I rarely shop at all - but I am in the market for a new phone this year. I'm still on the hunt, I haven't found a deal good enough yet. Maybe on Cyber Monday? Get that ribs recipe. First Friday Art Walk - we went, it was great, Art Walk is the best. We had two volunteering gigs this month, Harvest Festival and then Festival of the Lights! Which was all really de...

Tales of ocean, climate and triathlon. George V caused global warming? March 16, 2013 by of wind, waves and ocean currents. The global mean temperature is not constant – it varies over many timescales. Over the last 150 years the temperature of our planet has been increasing.
