Mountain to Sea Cycle Trail, Part of the Ohakune Coach Road

http://www.ohakunecoachroad.com/pages/bike-trail.html

About Old Coach Road. The cycle trail, which uses most of the historic Ohakune Coach Road between Ohakune Station and Horopito, was opened by New Zealand Prime Minister Mr John Key in July 2010. This part of the Ruapehu to Whanganui Nga Ara Tuhono cycle trail, also called Nga Haerenga, is the first of the national cycleway ‘quick start’ projects to be launched. Having a breather under the new Taonui Viaduct. Cycle Route to Horopito. The cycle trail is a mixture of new narrow track and the wide cobbled Co...

Hapuawhenua Viaduct Section of the Ohakune Coach Road

http://www.ohakunecoachroad.com/pages/hapuawhenua-viaduct.html

About Old Coach Road. The first Hapuawhenua Viaduct was classified as a Category 1 structure by Historic Places Trust in October 1995. The viaduct became redundant when a new concrete railway viaduct was completed in 1987. From Ohakune, the railway line has to climb around 500ft up to Horopito. The railway tracks climb on a 1:50 grade for most of the way, a steep climb for steam locomotives. A viaduct was needed to cross the Hapuawhenua valley. The steel work was assembled at ground level on site, and th...

Rediscovery of Ohakune Coach Road

http://www.ohakunecoachroad.com/pages/rediscovery.html

About Old Coach Road. Nearly 100 years later, in 2002, only a few people knew that an old overgrown road existed in the bush above Ohakune. Why it was there had long been forgotten. In October 2002, John McIlroy, a local deer hunter who knew where some of the road was, took Errol Vincent and Mike Ryan bush bashing along the overgrown, mostly hidden Skyline Section. Department of Conservation historians supported research of official government documents for clues as to why the road was there. When the Oh...
