Mathology: Talk Moves!

http://ohforathousand.blogspot.com/2010/10/talk-moves.html

Friday, October 1, 2010. I feel that the talk moves I did use were effective, and had the students grasped the concept better, I would have applied some of the more "higher order" talk moves such as asking the student to apply their own reasoning to someone else's reasoning. But when working with students who have trouble explaining their own reasoning (especially ELL students) to begin with, this is often the last talk move I want to use. October 5, 2010 at 11:50 AM. Monday, August 30, 2010. When I was a kid, I liked math. I didn't love it, it wasn't on my list of favorite things to do with my time, but I was fairly good at it without having to try too hard. Mathology: Response to Readings- Week 1

http://ohforathousand.blogspot.com/2010/09/response-to-readings-week-1.html

Thursday, September 2, 2010. Response to Readings- Week 1. 1 Taking a problem-solving approach to teaching math allows students to form their own ideas and methods for how to solve a given problem, which might not always be the easiest or the more effective way, but at least gets them thinking about the problem and how they see it in their head. 4 Saying that something is easy would probably be more frustrating to the student, although I've found myself saying it automatically at times. It would be b...

What do YOU know about math? Response to Week 1 Readings. In In Class Assignment. 1 How does taking a problem-solving approach to teaching math differ from first teaching children the skills they need to solve problems and then showing children how to use those skills to solve problems? And with more meaning. 2 How do you think your experiences, feelings, and beliefs about math will impact the kind of teacher of math that you will be or the kind of teacher of math that you want to be? 3 Not everyone beli...

What do YOU know about math? In Req'd Blog Entry. Invented math strategies are a particular area of interest to me. Although I don’t particularly like the term “invented” (I lean towards “personal”), I do understand and value the meaning of the whole concept. By using their own personal strategies, the students are able to create their own meaning: a skill/task that I find especially important. Overall, I look forward to eliciting more of these personal strategies from my students during math time. I...

What do YOU know about math? My Math Life Story. In Req'd Blog Entry. So, the first assignment in this class is to create a math “life story”. It’s an interesting concept, really, when you think about it. We could really all define our lives in terms of significant events, so why not significant. Anyways, to make this an authentic blog experience, I’ll add an entry below this one to really introduce myself. Until then, enjoy reading my math life story. The peak experience in my math life occurred. As a t...

What do YOU know about math? In Req'd Blog Entry. No pictures. There were way too many things happening in my placement / I was teaching, so taking pictures didn’t really work into this. I’ve wanted to explore the way that my CT, the other teachers in the school, and myself use these “math talk moves” in our own work. It was a very interesting observation. I want to say that the teachers that I observed used these all very well, but that would be a lie. Oct 04, 2010. Are you incorporating or being consci...

What do YOU know about math? In Req'd Blog Entry. Outside facing the school. To the most recent reiteration of NCLB. Through those changes, the facade of the school has remained constant, but it is the small. Changes (paint) that are seen. Inside of the school, the front hallway. En español, por favor! The classroom during math is … different for every grade. I see math on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade levels each day I am here. I really love what I see: definitions, thorough explanations,. August 10, 2015. Bull; 3,236 notes. How would you define obesity? A person once told me it was a body type but that doesn't sit quite right with me. If a third party called a skinny girl underweight she would cry skinny shamming. What's your take on it? We don’t define obesity. We don’t use the word if we can help it. Obesity medicalizes something about our bodies that doesn’t need to be medicalized. It calls our bodies illnesses. Fuck that. Ditto “underweight”. So fuck you very much for that. Be accompa...

Oh For Crafts Sake

Oh For Crafts Sake. Sunday, February 26, 2012. The year before last I really got into ATC's (Artist Trading Cards). They are little cards 2.5" x 3.5" and can be hand drawn, stamped, painted, mixed media or digital, basically whatever takes your fancy and the idea is you make them and you trade them with fellow ATC artists. It's a lot of fun and fairly quick to do. Here are the ones I made and traded. Most are Halloween ones. I forget to update this blog! A couple more cards that I have made recently :o).
