August 16, 2015. I had no desires to do much of anything on the Sunday after Oarai. But when a friend invited me down to Yuigahama in the afternoon, I couldn’t say no. Plus, he wanted to take his new car out for a spin. Packed, as per usual. Always a beautiful sight to behold. Not much to report on this one. Kept it low key and kept to ourselves for the most part. August 16, 2015. A good friend of mine celebrated his 32nd birthday and invited everyone out to a nice Spanish restaurant in Ginza for the festivities. While I know most of his friends, by no means am I close to any of them. Outside of the birthday boy, these are people I really only see once or twice a year. August 16, 2015. I had a rare visitor from my high school days show up in Tokyo a couple of weeks ago. Kelly, who was in my class of ’03, came to Japan with her husband. He works at Yale and had a conference to attend in Kobe. The couple started in Kobe, went to Kyoto, and finished things off in Tokyo. I took them out one afternoon and we met up in my neighborhood of Nakameguro. We had a quick seafood lunch, which was glorious, and then hopped on the train down to Yokohama to catch some Carp action.

In full disclosure, I've been experimenting with Tim Ferris's Slow Carb Diet. Bacon burger with grilled onions and hot sauce really hits the spot. I knew I was going to be in the house all day cooking, so I decided to start by making my own (tweaked a bit). Easy stuff. Double Burger with Bacon Caramelized Onions. I did a crap job slicing. Add onions, and salt lightly.

For the dough (I got 12 empanadas out of it):. 2 3/4 cups flour. 4 tbps butter (small cubes). 3/4 cup warm water. 1 - 2 tsp malt vinegar (pure vinegar is probably best, but this is as close as I could get). 1 lb ground beef. 1 16 oz can tomatoes with juice poured off (don't drain completely). 1 packet Goya Sazon (if desired).

Accidental Sausage and Lentil Soup. 1 lb hot ground sausage (Italian). 2 cups lentils (1/2 red, 1/2 green). 1 onion, finely chopped. 1 package frozen spinach. 4 Cups Beef Stock. 8 Cups Chicken Stock. 28 can of San Marzano tomatoes (make sure you've got the good italian kind). 1 cup red wine (ideally on the dryer side). 1 tbsp Hot Paprika. 1 tbsp Thyme (dry, use more for fresh chopped). 1 tsp Sage or to taste.
