A few more more I have learned in the Outback, in no particular order. I knew some of them passively (mostly the horse related ones), but they have now all made it into my active vocabulary. And then came the rain | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2015/01/02/and-then-came-the-rain
And then came the rain. And then came the rain, and the fields turned a lush green almost overnight. And then came the rain – Ah! The freshness of the morning air after a big rain! All the birds started singing again. The road turned into mud – and a trailer got bogged. The rain came, and a few billion insects with it, swarming us like plagues, one night the termites, one night the moths, one night the creaky cicadas (crickey are they loud! Christmas Tree | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2014/12/15/christmas-tree
I thought a Christmas Tree by 35 C would feel weird. It doesn’t. It’s inside the air-conditionned house, so the difference is not so big. It’s decorated in a different way than what we do in Europe. The branches don’t stick out – I even got told off for wanting to stretch them out when the tree was unpacked. Yep Apparently, the wealthiest woman in Australia owns a mine nearby. Or maybe a house in town. Or maybe both. And she pays for the prize, of course. And tagged Life in the Outback. December 15, 2014.

Little chopper | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2014/12/12/little-chopper
After the Big Storm. The generator had to be turned on because we had lost the main power. But how do you figure what and where the problem is, over thousands of kilometers in the Outback? I got the answer the next day, when a little chopper (. Came flying really close to the house, along the power lines. And a wild pig, though. As soon as the problem was identified, a repair truck was sent to set up a temporary pole, and we got the power back. And tagged Life in the Outback. December 12, 2014.

Newcomer on a stormy day | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2014/12/21/newcomer-on-a-stormy-day
Newcomer on a stormy day. For the two weeks running up to Christmas, I have had a neighbour. A young girl sleeping in the room next to mine. Her name is Alicia. She’s just finished high-school and is giving outback life a trial. If she likes it, she’ll come back and stay for a year, mustering and working on the property as a “junior”. After a whole evening of excitement and some pretty cool pictures, Alicia declared that she wanted to become a storm-chaser. And tagged Life in the Outback.

Skies | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2015/03/25/skies
I left the Outback more than two months ago now. I was sad to leave. The Outback grows on you. However immune you thought you were at the beginning, you’ll be leaving incredible things behind. I was sad to say good-bye to the two Little Buggers, and the gorgeous baby. I had become very attached to them. March 25, 2015. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Water Supply | The Govie Diaries
https://thegoviediaries.wordpress.com/2015/01/04/water-supply
The sink in the kitchen has two taps: one for rain water, one for bore (. Water The rain water is, well, rain water. Unfiltered. It is stored in one giant underground container under the garden, 60,000 liters if I’m not mistaking. It fills up in the wet season and when the storms give enough rain. Rain water tastes really good – no taste at all, which is what you want from water, right? And tagged Life in the Outback. January 4, 2015. And then came the rain. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
