8220;So you’re the one who took Frank’s job”. I knew almost immediately upon starting my job that I had big shoes to fill. Being completely new and fresh out of the gate, I knew I had my work ahead of me. These people didn’t know me, didn’t have any reason to trust me… that was something that I was going to have to build up. Perhaps I’m being touchy, but that seems to imply that he left it unwillingly, that I was cheaper labor that the paper hired to cut costs. Which isn’t remotely true &...With the econ...

Unexpected experience | Holly Setter- Uncensored

My TFAS journalism professor, Richard Benedetto. Repeatedly told our group we should start at a small newspaper. He expounded on the benefits of establishing a smaller source network where you can personally know those you’re reporting on, greater opportunities to publish and get the big stories. I didn’t doubt him at the time, but I also hoped against hope to be able to just crash into the big-time. In my time here, I’ve covered a flood that submerged over 1,000 cars. And the disappearance of a local man.

The great beyond | Holly Setter- Uncensored

Two weeks ago, I was celebrating my last class of my undergraduate career. Last week, it was my last exam. And then four days ago I walked across the steps in front of Kresge Gym, accepted my diploma, and drove away from Albion for the last time. I still don’t think it has hit me that I’m done. I am now a college graduate, going on into the big, grown-up working world. That’s right, the working world. To meet with the editor of the Ionia Sentinel-Standard. But when it all comes down to it, I couldn’...

8220;So you’re the one who took Frank’s job”. The last you heard from me, I was in the transition week between college and full-time employment. I was all geeked out about starting my job. Bragging about how lucky I was to find a job in journalism. Particularly a full-time reporter position and kind of waving off all of my obligations. Now I’m over a month in. Expecting me to say that I no longer think this is the opportunity of a lifetime? If that’s the case, I’m sorry to disappoint you. Not on your life.
