I could see it - through a day from hell - I kept getting flashes of that remaining few centimeters of Otaru wine in the bottle at home, poured into the glass and beckoning to me: " Come sip me! BBQ day again in our house - from early morning the kitchen, entrance hall and front door area full of boxes, food, alcohol and people. In past years she has sat out in neighborhood parks or restaurants to avoid coming home, exited thru windows and generally got angry with us and the guests for staying too long and making too much mess.

T think of her, am not there with her, am not there for her, she still is continuing to languish in a world she no longer understands. And, of course, immediately, I felt guilty for not being at her side all the time to help her navigate the stormy waters of dementia, to cheer her up and embrace her with all the love I feel for her. Certainly I know I cannot give up my life to become my mother? T we all do that?

I am thankful for my mother; for the mother I had growing up, for the woman she was, for the softness of her skin, and the smile on her face when she sees me. I am thankful for every day I still have with her. I am thankful for the touch of her hand, for how much she seems to love my children (her grandchildren). Okaasan, me and Dear Son are gathered round the table in her room - flapping our elbows up and down like Easter chicks and then throwing our hands out sideways with accompanying noises. And Okaasan is our leader. It's a good sign. That she remembers, with enjoyment, the exercises from day care and does them unprompted. Anyway. Okaasan good. Links to this post.

About okaasan’s blog. My mother's blog. May 2, 2014. I was thinking how lucky I am to be retired! Retirement should be renamed as rejuvenation, reinventing and rejoicing. The past six years have been filled with gratitude— truly a rebirth for my soul. Don’t misunderstand me as I loved my work. In August my sister unexpectedly died. She was only 62 years and her sudden death was a shock. I was very worried about my brother-in-law , nephew and niece as well as my mother. The other event was my daughter.
