Since Richard Backwell visited Bimal's home village of Okhle in 2003, he has been extremely active in fundraising to support development projects in Okhle and the surrounding villages. Okhle Village Trust was informally started by Richard Backwell back in 2003. Richard was trekking with his local guide Bimal Gurung and the two struck up a frendship that would develop and strengthen to this day. Following the trek, Bimal invited Richard to come back to his home village of Okhle to meet the villagers and experience life in a rural nepalese village. Richard Backwell was formally recognised by the queen for his extraordinary work in Nepal and received an MBE in 2007.

Out of the around 250 species of birds sighted in this area , 160 species are of migratory birds coming all the way from Tibet, Europe and Siberia for their winter sojourn. With the onset of winters, these migratory birds start coming in from the month of November and as soon as the summers set in, they start flying back to their homes.
