From Matamata we drove over to Stratford, which was a very long drive that included dodging wild goats along one stretch of the road. From Stratford we drove to Peka Peka where we got to stay with Annette. Isn't her house fantastic? We'll have to walk on the beach a little later. We're pretty sure the kids could have stayed at Annette's beach front house for the rest of the trip and been very happy.

While at this zoo we went to many different animals exhibits and watched the animals be fed and listened to a short informational talk. How could we not pose with a gigantic kiwi? The town of Matamata is about two hours south of Auckland. The tour takes you onto the private property where they filmed scenes for The Lord Of The Rings. Trilogy and The Hobbit. Trilogy. Whether you are a die hard fan or just curious the tour will fill up your desire to know more about the whole filming process. It is a magical place.

Recently a coworker brought in a huge bag of garlic scapes from his garden to share, and I was happy to accept a few handfuls, as I've never had them before and I rarely turn down an opportunity to try a new vegetable. They look kind of alien-ish, I think. The tops will (I believe) bloom into flowers if not trimmed at this stage. Garlic Scape and Spinach Pesto. Makes about 1 1/2 cups. 8-10 garlic scapes, chopped in 1" pieces. 4 ounces spinach leaves.
