Vita Sackville-West garden – Old Dog. New Tricks
http://olddognewtricks.me/tag/vita-sackville-west-garden
Old Dog. New Tricks. Tag: Vita Sackville-West garden. Back to basics…. February 14, 2015. June 27, 2015. It’s that time of year. Weather frightful. Rain hurling itself at the window. Wind wailing in the eaves. But, as far as I’m concerned, it can do what it likes. These are the beds I’m working on. The Where Do I Begin Bed. The White Mischief Bed. I went all Vita. With this bed and decided it was going to be my white moment. It hasn’t worked. Which is why I’m having a rethink. The Never Satisfied Bed.

Old Dog. New Tricks. The Curious Behaviour of the Cycad on the Terrace. October 10, 2015. So I know that paraphrasing someone else’s title in order to attract attention is a cheap trick. But I have a sneaky feeling that if I called this post something like ‘The Life Cycle of the Cycad’ people not so interested in cycads (of which I recognise there may be many) might not read it. And I’d hate for you to be missing out! We’re not just talking sightings two days running of a Pine Marten, (see Pinch Me.

Old Dog. New Tricks. January 21, 2015. After the big announcement in my last post about NOT being a garden designer, I’ve got a confession to make. Because I think I might have been a bit hasty. I’ve just spent the last few hours doing planting plans for my garden. I’ve taken photos, done some sketches, brushed the cobwebs off my CAD design skills, pulled out a few plant guides, and hallelujah…. Yew hedge in waiting. When I heard my greenhouse calling to me in a welcoming tone, rather than sitting petula...

Old Dog. New Tricks. Not all who wander are lost – Part V. October 26, 2016. October 28, 2016. Is late always better than never? What about the christmas cards that arrive after the big day? The guests who turn up at the party at the moment when people are beginning to leave? There are times when – given the choice – you’d go for never! The last day of our trip is a Sunday. And we’re in Barcelona. Is there anywhere better to spend a Sunday? I really don’t think so. About our stay at H1868. Up on the roof.

About the Garden - A Small Sunny Garden by Amy Myers
https://www.smallsunnygarden.com/about-the-garden
A Small Sunny Garden. Welcome to the small, sunny garden! It was born into a bare patch of desert dirt back in autumn of 2014. It spills off the edges of our patio and reclaims a bit of the surrounding desert for habitation: for us, for the hummingbirds and bees and butterflies and lizards and toads and, must I admit, rabbits! Here is a look at the setting and the creation of this little desert garden. The garden resides just on (or beyond, according to many locals! The region has long been home to a num...
The Rosewood Tree in January - A Small Sunny Garden by Amy Myers
https://www.smallsunnygarden.com/2017/01/11/the-rosewood-tree-in-january
A Small Sunny Garden. The Rosewood Tree in January. After failing miserably to keep up with the tree following meme last year, I am once more setting out to choose and follow a tree month by month with the theme hosted by Squirrelbasket. This time the tree selected is a resident of my own garden. The foliage is beautiful; slender, glossy leaves terminate in a sharp point. Because they grow in very upright clusters, one sees the somewhat paler underside most frequently. The genus was named for French chem...

Reflections on the dew pond. A blog about being a gardener. The arrival of Winter. Other people’s tools. Welcome to my blog, and thank you for visiting. I am not sure why with the whole World Wide Web of things to look at you decided to come here, but I’m very glad that you did. Lastly, I come to what this blog will not be. I will not be writing any ‘how to’ articles to try and convey that I am an expert. I am always learning, just like you, and I will try to not patronise you. Most important of all, I w...
In a Vase: Desert Casual - A Small Sunny Garden by Amy Myers

A Small Sunny Garden. In a Vase: Desert Casual. Monday pottery Eremophila Justicia Lantana GoodwinsCreekGray Lavandula Artemisia. As Lavender x "Goodwin's Creek Gray" is still loaded with blooms, I decided to use their dark purple to contrast with the slender scarlet of the chuparosa. White lantana completed the flower colors. The lantanas have seen some foliage die-back due to temperatures in the upper 30s (about 3 C), but the white one has come right back into flower. Lantana with Artemisia and Lavender.
A Day in January - A Small Sunny Garden by Amy Myers

A Small Sunny Garden. A Day in January. Muhlenbergia Pennisetum Lavandula winter2016/2017 Cereus sweetpeas. So yesterday I felt ever so slightly guilty. I was hearing about cold temperatures and snow, from Copenhagen to Houston to Italy. And I went out in the sunny garden to plant out my sweet peas. It was a beautiful day to be in the garden. Am I the only gardener who still feels that mysterious thrill of climbing into the back of a border and getting down among the plants? January in the desert garden!

The arrival of Winter – Reflections on the dew pond
https://reflectionsonthedewpond.wordpress.com/2016/01/31/the-arrival-of-winter
Reflections on the dew pond. A blog about being a gardener. The arrival of Winter. Other people’s tools. The arrival of Winter. Winter took a long time to arrive this year. A mild wet Autumn extended all the way through December and even in the first weeks of January a few lonely leaves still clung obstinately to the tips of the oak trees branches. Any work in the garden needs to be vigorous to generate heat and keep the cold at bay. Once the extremities get cold it is almost impossible to warm them ...

Reflections on the dew pond. A blog about being a gardener. The arrival of Winter. Other people’s tools. All I want for Christmas. Are warm feet. So, if you are thinking of getting me a present, please can it be some thick, warm socks? Our feet are our direct connection with the Earth. We need to be aware of what they are telling us if we are going to be able to stick to the right path, without stumbling or stepping on others. I’m going to put mine up for a few days now. December 24, 2016. January 1, 2017.

Thursday, November 30, 2017. Our Book is DONE! Tuesday was her 83rd birthday and I gave her the final proof for the finished book as a present. She was thrilled. I told her that I would get it produced if she approved the proof. She did and, last night, I completed the process to publish on Blurb. In a couple of weeks she will receive the finished hard cover books. Sunday, September 17, 2017. An Old Dog from the North. It’s been a while since we shared some Canadian Whiskey, Cheers buddy!
