Friends of Old Durham Gardens. Old Durham is only one of a number of gardens, parks and woodlands open to the public in Durham. A woodland adjoining Old Durham, and historically part of the same estate. The woods, which contain a number of habitats and many footpaths, are today managed by the Friends of Pelaw Woods. Provide a natural corridor running through the city of Durham, and provide access to Old Durham from the city centre. Managed by Durham University, the Botanic Gardens. Charity No. 1164516.

Friends of Old Durham Gardens. Despite our achievements, we still have a lot of work and plenty of plans for the future. Among these plans, we would like to:. Plant the upper garden. We hope to plant up the formal walled gardens, using early 18th century designs and espaliered fruit trees. We aim to restore the terrace to a late 17th century planting style. We would like to plant hedges along the boundary between the lower garden and the neighbouring footpath, to give the gardens a tidier appearance.

Friends of Old Durham Gardens. Over the past years, Old Durham has taken part in annual Heritage Open Days, public walks and music concerts. We have recorded past events below, and hope to continue in a similar vein into the future. As part of the annual national Heritage Open Days in mid-September, the upper garden is open for extended hours. Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th September 2016.
