Route 66 - The Mother Road
http://www.oldroute66.us/aboutus.html
Welcome to Old Route 66 .us. I am located in Springfield, Missouri - The Birthplace of Route 66. After changing jobs again in 2005, I continued to travel, but seldom on those same roads. In the fall, 2007, while 'surfing the net' one evening, I came across a web site about Route 66. I was immediately hooked! I began reading everything I could find on Route 66, buying postcards, and Tivo-ing any TV show I could find. I am still a few years from retirement, so this site will grow slowly at first. Pleas...

Get Your Kicks...: July 2009

Stories from The Mother Road. Saturday, July 18, 2009. Meramec Caverns Barn: Cayuga, IL. Cayuga, IL is one of those places that can be describe as forgettable. There isn't much to this tiny town in Livingston County. All that dot the countryside are fields, barns and more farmland. But look closely and you can discover a hidden treasure of Route 66's golden days; a newly restored Meramec Caverns barn. Sputty T. Sputnik. Friday, July 17, 2009. Historic Streetcar Diner: Gardner, IL. Sputty T. Sputnik.

Stories from The Mother Road. Friday, October 2, 2009. Underground Tunnel: Odell, IL. Rolling down the streets of the sleepy little town of Odell, IL it is hard to believe that the Route was so busy that it required a tunnel to be constructed. Across the street from St. Paul Catholic Church lies the underground subway. The traffic along the Route was so congrested at the time, that for the safety of church-goers and schoolchildren, a tunnel was constructed in 1937 for everyone's safe passage.
Get Your Kicks...: Random Attractions: Dwight, IL
http://route66traveller.blogspot.com/2010/09/random-attractions-dwight-il.html
Stories from The Mother Road. Sunday, September 26, 2010. Random Attractions: Dwight, IL. These sights are just one of the many little attractions that makes Route 66 charming. Just down the street from the Texaco station in Dwight, stands this structure. As you can it is all decked out in vintage gas pumps and other memorabilia. And directly in front of that, lies a "Historic Route 66" painted shield on the road. It keeps you in check and lets you know you're still cruising on the Mother Road.
Get Your Kicks...: January 2011

Stories from The Mother Road. Tuesday, January 11, 2011. Neon Sign: Lexington, IL. Back in the heyday of Route 66, neon signs were used to advertise everything from tires to diners. Today in Lexington, a neon sign sign still stands and points the way to the business district of this sleepy little town. Sputty T. Sputnik. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Neon Sign: Lexington, IL. Get Your Kicks...: November 2009
http://route66traveller.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Stories from The Mother Road. Thursday, November 19, 2009. Dwight, IL: Ambler's Texaco Station. Ambler's Texaco Station was built in 1933 by Jack Shore. It featured the common architectural gas station design know as the "house and canopy" or domestic style. The filling station had many owners over the years, but the most prominent one remains Basil "Tubby" Ambler who owned and operated the station between 1938-1966. Today the station is still refered to as the "Ambler's Texaco Station.". Join the Route ...
Get Your Kicks...: April 2010

Stories from The Mother Road. Friday, April 2, 2010. Riviera Roadhouse: Gardner, IL. The Riviera Roadhouse is one of those places just dripping in history. Al Capone hid liquor here and film stars such as Tom Mix and Gene Kelly ate at the Roadhouse. The Riviera was built in 1928 by businessman James Girot. It is not just one building but rather the result of buildings being slapped together from Gardner and Wilmington being moved to the present location. Sputty T. Sputnik. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Stories from The Mother Road. Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Two Cell Jail: Gardner, IL. The earliest historical site located within Gardner is the Two Cell Jailhouse. Built in 1906 and was in operation until the late 1950s. The white brick structure is probably the most "advertised" attraction in Gardner but the most forgotten thanks to the Riviera roadhouse and streetcar. As you enter the downtown, signs will point you in its direction. Sputty T. Sputnik. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Get Your Kicks...: August 2009
http://route66traveller.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Stories from The Mother Road. Sunday, August 16, 2009. Big Al's Hot Dogs: Dwight, IL. Big Al's Hot Dogs. I really don't know much about this establishment. I could have swore it was opened last year. But the last time I went by, there was a "For Sale" posted. Definitely not an original hot dog stand on Route 66. But it was modeled as being a throwback to all those great food stops on the way. Unfortunately, like most places on the Mother Road, it's slowly fading away. Get your "Kicks on Doghouse 66.".

Old Routes
Writing about the "Old Routes" of the US. US Highways, Trails, and life nearby. Sunday, May 23, 2010. Don't Change My Freeway! One of the first freeways built in the western US, was the Pasadena Freeway. Originally called Arroyo Seco Parkway, it has also been known at US 66 and now "The 110". The parkway was the beginning of the massive web of freeways around Los Angeles. Built to handle 27,000 cars a day at 45 mph, it was a relaxing drive down the parkway. As Los Angeles expanded and more freeways w...
