HWKEE (Henrietta Wilfrida Korongo East East) was discovered by the Leakeys but was never published, so little is known about it. Located in Lower Middle Bed II, HWKEE is one of the main sites under excavation by OGAP. Exceptionally among African archaeological sites, Olduvai preserves many artefacts in primary or near-primary contexts, providing additional information on hominid behaviour. Most of recent research in Olduvai has focused in Bed I and Lower Bed II, so OGAP’s work on Middle and Upper Bed II represents research at the forefront of the transitional period between the Oldowan and the Acheulean. On-going large-scale excavations at four key sites at Olduvai Gorge: EFHR, FC, MNK and HWKEE.

EFHR

EF-HR is located in the North side of the Olduvai Gorge, around 1.3 km west from the Third Fault. It was discovered in 1931 by Sir Evelyn Fuchs and Professor Hans Reck, and named after their initials. The first excavations were undertaken by M. Leakey in 1963.

The MNK (Mary Nicol Korongo) lies on the Side Gorge, opposite from FC, about 1.3 km from the confluence of the Main and Side Gorges. MNK includes two localities, the Skull Site and the Main Occupation Site, located respectively in the lower and upper parts of Middle Bed II.
