The Gentlemen's Blog to Midnite Cinema: May 2015

Wednesday, May 27, 2015. The Colossus of New York (1958). Say what you will about the 1950s (and I know a lot of folks today love to bemoan how repressed and repressive it was underneath a false veneer of happiness; I personally love watching films from that time because the filmmakers had to be extremely sneaky and creative in order to discuss more subversive/unpopular topics), but that era had a tremendous amount of style to burn. 8217;s World of Tomorrow. It felt like the future should feel. We’...

The Gentlemen's Blog to Midnite Cinema: July 2015

Friday, July 31, 2015. Directed by: Andy Wachowski. Credited as the Wachowski Brothers at the time of filming). Time to look at overlooked film by the Wachowski Siblings. To my limited research and knowledge, this is the only Wachowski film that does not have science fiction or fantasy elements. So this movie has no pseudo-philosophy and bullet time footage and is more a love letter to film noir wrapped around a pair of brass knuckles. 789 out of 10. Posted by Brett Ridley. Sunday, August 30, 2009. Hiruko The Goblin (1991) 88 Minutes. Shinya Tsukamoto, Director. Based on two stories from the Demon Hunter manga series by Japanese author Daijiro Moroboshi, Hiroku tells the story of a goblin let loose through one of the Gates of Hell. As it begins terrorizing a school one summer, a small group of students and an archeology professor struggle to find a way to stop it. From the opening moments of this film, I was immediately struck by the realization that Hiruko the Goblin.

Friday, June 17, 2011. My Thoughts On Rest Stop (2006). John Shiban, Director. 80 Fun Filled Minutes. I haven't been this angry with a film since the remake of It's Alive. I would rather watch the "reboot" of Friday the 13th again than this thing. Avoid. NOTE: An old grill from the dumpster was used for this review, I don't cook on that thing anymore obviously. Thursday, September 17, 2009. 94 Minutes. Steve Buscemi, Director. Willem DaFoe is excellent as Earl Copen. DaFoe portrays Copen as haggard and wise, a jaded prisoner in a way that seems more genuine than say Morgan Freeman's turn as Red in Shawshank Redemption. This is not meant as a slight against Shawshank Redemption. The film also stars Danny Trejo, whom Bunker befriended in Folsom Prison. Many other familiar character actors turn up in the film as well, such as John Heard ( C.H.U.D. Feel appropriate...

Wednesday, June 24, 2015. Letter openers are not what they used to be. Today when you buy one or are “gifted” one by some benevolent corporate entity or what have you, you get a rounded off piece of plastic with a blade surrounded by more plastic. Is it safe to use? You bet, but it’s also damned boring to look at, and it has no sense of adventure to it. Letter openers used to look like daggers. It was curved, had an ornate (yet still chintzy) scabbard, everything but the jewel in the butt of the hilt.

The Gentlemen's Blog to Midnite Cinema: Kill and Kill Again (1981)

Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Kill and Kill Again (1981). Steve Chase ( James Ryan. Whose Kiai [the yell martial artists do when practicing their art] my brother and I used to imitate constantly when we were kids) is an agent (or maybe a mercenary or just an upstanding citizen, but he is definitely the top dog in the South African martial arts world) who is approached by Candy Kane ( Anneline Kriel. 1974’s Miss World) to rescue her scientist father Dr. Horatio Kane ( John Ramsbottom. Graphic design and illustration. Update - May, 2016. Curse Facebook's Real Name policy. Over 8 years of promoting on FB is now all down the drain. I can't even get FB to respond to a request to convert my personal page to a business page. To hell with providing them a photo ID with my birthdate. That's insane. ArtSkull can still be found on Twitter. Update - July, 2015. Still alive and kickin'. Working on logo design for Garagehouse Pictures. Update - December, 2014. Spotify: Christmas Cocktails playlist.
