A Hoosier In The South Seas. Keeping an eye on Bingiza. Hot off the ironic press →. February 18, 2011 · 2:52 pm. The hunt is on. Right into his mean, feral eyes. It was one of the most gratifying early morning bike rides I’ve ever had. Ok yeah, I’m desperate. Kind of. To close this post, I leave you with this sweet map that offers an interesting geo-political perspective on Reunion and the Indian Ocean region. I love maps. Sorry it’s in French. Keeping an eye on Bingiza. Hot off the ironic press →. Check...

A Hoosier In The South Seas. Hot off the ironic press. Le voile intégral à la Réunion en question →. March 13, 2011 · 4:27 pm. Creole kids on carbon fiber: WHAT? Have you ever seen a road bike so tiny? The helmet on this scout reads “Kiddy”. WHAT IS HE DOING WITH A BETTER BIKE THAT ME? Turns out the Reunionese take road racing pretty seriously. There were events for kids of all ages. I even ran into one of my students, a 6th grader, pedaling around after his race. WHAT? Hot off the ironic press. Would wi...

A Hoosier In The South Seas. Newer posts →. February 10, 2011 · 12:11 pm. Keeping an eye on Bingiza. Among the many (many) ridiculous moments that comprise an average day in the life of an American in Reunion is the quick international weather check. Today’s weather is a particularly absurd example of what I usually see. Check out those numbers. To have a fresh supply in the event that there’s no running water. A “Red Alert” is more serious, and everyone is required to stay indoors,...Above: the voluntee...

Up in the Air | La vie à la réunionnaise
https://lizziecollins.wordpress.com/2010/12/13/up-in-the-air
Tales from a volcano in the Indian Ocean. La vie à la réunionnaise. Up in the Air. Joyeux fêtes à tous! I got sunburned at the beach yesterday Where the heck am I again? So how can natives of the southern hemisphere tell that it’s Christmas without snow, icicles, and frozen fingers? Does Santa need to wear sunscreen? Here in Réunion, there are two sure-fire indicators that the holiday season has arrived:. 1 The sudden flowering of the bright red Flamboyant tree. 2 The advent of litchis (. He is a part of...

Tuesday, February 8, 2011. It's warming up. I mean, literally, the weather starting to be hot again. I was really hoping the Yemeni winter would stay a couple more months but the spring/summer/fall monster of heat and humidity is moving back in. Alas. As for the weather, it's getting warmer. Saturday, February 5, 2011. Join the Flour Revolution. It's the yeast you can do. Thursday, February 3, 2011. The Cost of Stability. Monday, November 22, 2010. Saudi Arabia: 4 Good ol' Yemen: 0. I was getting a hair cut during the game. As the updated score came into the barber shop and it became clear the ol' fightin' Yemenis were going to lose, the barbers conversation turned from how the game was going to noting how the entire Yemen team was from the north and that there's only one player from Aden. If there were more southerns, why, we all know the outcome would have been different. For more check out www.yemengulfcup20.com. I hop...

Saturday, October 30, 2010. The latest news out of Yemen is would be attackers using the postal service to send explosives to the US. Read more at the BBC here. I will take this as a suggestion to fly economy, not freight, when coming home. Is a good summary of the current issues facing Yemen courtesy of the NY times. Sunday, October 3, 2010. A Change of Seasons. It's true. Some buildings are kept COLD while the outside is affirmatively HOT. If only I could remember the name of the cold medicine.

Monday, August 30, 2010. I'm sure many you have had the unfortunate experience of being pulled over and ticketed for some traffic violation. I believe part of what makes that entire process effective in addition to whatever fine, paperwork and court time you have to endure, is the discomfort of seeing people drive by rubbernecking and ogling at your unenviable situation. Sunday, August 29, 2010. Fasting during Ramadan ends with the Magrib call to prayer. At the beginning of the month that call was ar...

Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Plot Lines and other developments. I see this as a remarkable statement about the situation in Yemen. Southerns seem to not be afraid of northern retribution and must have the sense that the time is coming when they can reclaim their land from those in the regime that took it. This will likely be my last post from Yemen as I will be leaving soon. I will do my best to keep writing about Yemen related issues but I can't make any promises. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
This Yemeni Life: Safeties First
http://thisyemenilife.blogspot.com/2011/03/safeties-first.html
Saturday, March 5, 2011. Clashes in north Yemen left several dead (see article here. The Houthi leadership recently announced their support for the protests calling for the president to resign. This is notable as it signals an abandonment (at least temporarily) of regional conflict in favor of a united front against the regime. I can't remember if the Southern movement has made a similar declaration but it as well would mean trouble for the president. On a related note, I am yet to see a Yemeni soldier o...
You are more likely to be struck by lightning than be eaten by a shark… | La vie à la réunionnaise
https://lizziecollins.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/you-are-more-likely-to-be-struck-by-lightening-than-be-eaten-by-a-shark
Tales from a volcano in the Indian Ocean. La vie à la réunionnaise. You are more likely to be struck by lightning than be eaten by a shark…. Me jumping into shark-infested waters in St Leu…. Les dents de la mer. Sharks, or literally ‘teeth of the sea’) occasionally happen, and most years see a shark attack on a surfer or spear fisherman. This is no reason to be paranoid, though; the risks are statistically very low. Statistically very low. Right. How low? What would make a better story? Swim with a group.

I'm on an Island
I'm on an Island. The basketball court was the only thing anyone would talk about on Kuttu. Where is it going? When do we start? How many bags of cement was that again? It seemed like the perfect project; if I gave it a push it would roll to the end on its own. Not so much. As much as I gave my friends a hard time for being lazy the land got cleared pretty quickly. In only a month we were able to empty out a plot of land big enough to build a high school basketball court. By manpower only. Wi...So I lied...
