Open SSH is possibly the single most important tool in my software stack. It's how I connect to the development and live servers that I do all my work on, sure. But it's more than that. It's the transmission medium for git, which makes it vital all on its own. It's how I move files around. It's how I work from home or the office without any real interruption. Linux is my favourite OS, and has been since I discovered it back in the 90's. I actually don't like the direction it's taken since then - Ubuntu. Are very helpful when you just want to get up and running quickly, but most of the Linux GUIs suck massively. Unity, Gnome 3, KDE 4 are just a few of the most recent examples of the problem. Create subdirectories all at once. Tar -cf archive.tar foo bar. Creates archive.tar containing files 'foo' and 'bar'. Tar -tvf archive.tar. Tar -xvzf archive.tgz.

Firefox was the first browser I actually enjoyed using, and although it's had its ups and downs since the early days, it's still my favourite. People keep telling me I should switch to Chrome but every time I give it a try, it annoys me by just not having quite a good enough feature set. The main extensions that I use / can't do without are:. Adds vi-like keybindings, makes it easy to be almost mouse-free. When you ARE using the mouse, it should do more than just move a pointer around.

Screen is a wonderful application that allows you to have multiple commands shells in a single window; and to have it be persistent outside of your logged-in status; and to share those shells with other users. I use it so extensively, both locally on my own PC and remotely on other servers that I'd go so far as to say I almost never do any work in a non-screen session. It's that useful. To increase my ability to keep screened sessions straight, I use the config below.

One and One Makes Three. There is no time like the present to start keeping track of the countless blessings that have come our way over the past several months. We are currently 21 weeks pregnant, and expecting our first son in September 2006. I have no idea how I was lucky enough to get two wonderful men in my life (my husband and my son-to-be), but one thing is certain - I am most appreciative of everything and will do my best to stay mindful of all my blessings.
