The Dream BBQ serves heaping piles of delicious smoked meat in styrofoam trays. On the side walk out front are three large billowing smokers. Inside The Dream is dark, even in the bright heat of day. It has gumball machines, drop ceilings and stainless steel cafeteria style serving trays. I have pork ribs, mac and cheese and potato salad. There are men at a nearby table discussing last weeks Merriweather-PacQuiao match. "I thought it would be a better fight than it was" one of them says.

Finding a business was harder than I anticipated. I've been to this coffee shop once before. Today, I had my camera and subsequently met Boyd, another customer. We had a great conversation about cameras. Turns out he's a portrait photographer, recommended I take a look at an artist's work. I didn't find the artist but found two incredibly inspiring women with the same name. Boyd invited me to become a regular. I think I'm going to have to take him up on it. One Large participant: SM.

This coffee house is a a block away from my place of work and many of my co-workers frequent it for coffee breaks. The reason I know this is a black-owned business is because the owner is often there to greet his customers, make coffee, and ring them up. This business has only been around a few years but it's such a part our the lives of not only my co-workers but many of the Laney Community College students and Bay Area Transit workers that come for a coffee fix. Recently spoke with Joy Katz, a Pittsburgh artist and poet who, along with theater director and activist Cynthia Croot, debuted their One Large interactive art project at the Open Engagement conference. But it wasn’t that easy. Katz and Croot recognized the lack of black designers and craftspeople as a sign of the greater economic inequality in Pittsburgh and throughout the country.
