Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy
One Lately come: December 2011
http://onelatelycome.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Thursday, December 1, 2011. At a store meeting where I work, the manager asked what "tradition" people had for giving and the like as Christmas approached. Now, remember, this is a retail store - and in retail, the ultimate goal is sales, whatever else may be added in in terms of customer service and the like. During this brief exchange, one of our associates said that their "gift exchange" is actually "buy whatever you want.". During the Fast we deny the...

Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Thursday, August 26, 2010. God in a Box. Fr Stephen at Glory to God for All Things. Has written a marvelous post entitled Treasure in a Box. He has dealt with history and other issues in a way that causes me to say, "Why couldn't I have come up with that? Bottom line: in Holy Orthodoxy, God isn't kept in the box! His insights describe very well things that I wrestled with for years. It is worth it! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Larger items crafted include ...

Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Saturday, July 31, 2010. Some further comments on Culture. Context is everything, isn't it? In the previous post, "Culture as Solvent," it must be made clear that the we were speaking of the culture in which we live globally and socially. We are always in a culture of some sort . and not every culture is destructive. In that culture, everything is at all times in flux. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live I live ...
One Lately come: Come and See … CHRIST in our midst
http://onelatelycome.blogspot.com/2014/11/come-and-see-christ-in-our-midst.html
Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Friday, November 21, 2014. Come and See … CHRIST in our midst. Quite apart from the Christmas (or is it “Holiday”) themes are the tensions that abound. Wars and rumors of war abound around the globe – and the angry cries of many come out in our own communities. Think about it: three greetings that are very much Orthodox. Christ is in our midst! He is and ever shall be. Truly He is risen! Christ is our life! We die to live in Him! He takes us into Himself!
One Lately come: Focus
http://onelatelycome.blogspot.com/2011/04/focus.html
Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Sunday, April 3, 2011. During this Great and Holy Lent (and throughout our lives) we would do well to fast from other images in our lives. It would do us well to limit the use of TV, Internet, radio, that we might indeed look to Jesus, our Salvation, to Christ our God. It would be better to spend more time in our icon corner, and less time glued to the TV. Just some thoughts from one lately come . Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Born and raised a Luth...

On Luther and the Desert Fathers. OrthoCuban has a new post entitled “ On Luther and the Desert Fathers. Here is a quote:. Of sin is what keeps us from becoming like the pharisee who became proud of what he did and fell into a worse sin. If anything, the record of the Desert Fathers may call us to ask God that every bit of our sins be brought to our consciousness. So that we may truly and finally grow into the image of Christ our God and avoid falling into the sin of the pharisee. Get to Know the Original.

Conversi ad Dominum: Faith alone is not enough

The ancient call to prayer, Conversi ad Dominum. Turn to the Lord). There was an error in this gadget. Faith alone is not enough. Commenting on the Last Judgment scene in Matthew 25, St Augustine confronts head-on the false theology which says that faith alone is sufficient. When examining that scene, he points out that Our Lord charges the condemned "with having failed, not in faith, but in good works.". Fr John W Fenton. Monday, March 05, 2012. Conversi ad Dominum: Pentecost Day homily
http://conversiaddominum.blogspot.com/2014/06/pentecost-day-homily.html
The ancient call to prayer, Conversi ad Dominum. Turn to the Lord). There was an error in this gadget. What is it that brings this bright idea into Solomon's mind? To be sure, his experience in the school of hard-knocks helps him along. But what gives Solomon such wisdom is the Holy Spirit. To strive for that life, we need the Holy Spirit. For He helps us see that such a life is both real and possible. And He plants within us the zeal to yearn and strive for such a life. It makes sense that love must not...

The ancient call to prayer, Conversi ad Dominum. Turn to the Lord). There was an error in this gadget. I was granted the privilege of preaching the homily at the pan-Orthodox Vespers this evening at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church hosted by the Council of Orthodox Christian Churches of Detroit. What follows is the homily. I pray that you find the words encouraging. By the prayers of St Simon, St Mary of Egypt whom we commemorate this day, and of all the saints, may it be so. And by their prayers, may we...

The problem with Lutheranism is existential. Pillar and Ground of the Truth has a new post entitled “The Kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in power”. Here is a quote:. The problem with Lutheranism is existential. It is not the Church. And that is not a judgment based on Orthodox sources. It is based on the words of the Lutheran Confessions.". The ancient call to prayer, Conversi ad Dominum. Turn to the Lord). There was an error in this gadget. Changing Churches - A Recap. The announcement of the publication of Changing Churches. Has caused me to reflect, once more, on my move from Lutheranism into the Orthodox Church. In the final analysis, however,...

One Lately come
Reflections of one lately come to Holy Orthodoxy. Monday, August 29, 2016. Come and See The Blessed Theotokos. As I write this, we are just past the Dormition of the Blessed and Holy Theotokos. As Vasili and I were chanting over these days, we were both “hit between the eyes” (if you will) as we reflected on that which we chanted. For a moment, focus again on Apolytikion of the Afterfeast of the Dormition:. In giving birth you retained your virginity. Normally, one would think terms of giving birth.
