A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic: An official restart to this little blog

http://oneyearinsyria.blogspot.com/2011/01/official-restart-to-this-little-blog.html

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic. Monday, January 24, 2011. An official restart to this little blog. Though it briefly seemed that this blog was about to turn into reblogging the New York Times, I'm happy to report that I'm safe in Egypt and am breathing life back into this blog, unintentionally ironic name and all. No pictures from the visit but welcome back to oneyearinsyria or Egypt or wherever we end up. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic: Poetry night

http://oneyearinsyria.blogspot.com/2010/09/poetry-night.html

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic. Tuesday, September 21, 2010. A short post before I can get back to posting pictures. I saw two great. Pieces in the New York Times yesterday that I thought I would share. The first is about the theft of bricks from St. Louis, which are then. Transported as far as New Orleans! This really resonated with me as I. Loved just driving through town and seeing the beautiful brick buildings. Http:/ www.nytimes.com/2010/09/20/us/20brick.html? In addition to original wo...

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic. Sunday, March 27, 2011. Hi all, people I know tapped me to help with Tahrir Documents, a project translating the multitude of pamphlets, small-run newspapers, party platforms, etc that have come out during the Egyptian revolution, and hosting the documents and their translation for posterity, journalists, academics, and curious members of the public (=you! No the constitutional amendments yes to a new constitution. For personal behavior after the revolution.

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic: June 2010

http://oneyearinsyria.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic. Saturday, June 19, 2010. Classical music and a dinner party. This past Thursday, however, we had the pleasure to get our AIDS and TB tests done. This meant a lot of bureaucracy, riding from one office to another, waiting around, and finally a small blood draw, which for me led to the predictable 15 minutes of fainting afterwards. All is well that ends well, though. Among the failures (maybe not a language-related one? Tuesday, June 8, 2010. For me, the Middle ...

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic: July 2010

http://oneyearinsyria.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

A blog of travel, food, friends, and Arabic. Saturday, July 31, 2010. A few jokes, and teaching! Ten days since the last post. My apologies! I've heard a few jokes in the past few days that I liked and thought I would pass along. One is simply "your handwriting is really nice". but what is understood is that you're (jokingly) accusing the other person of writing for the secret police. Useful when someone asks you a sensitive political question or something like that. Another student in the program (also ...

One Year in Spain

One Year in Spain. The repository of our many thoughts, observations, reflections, and documentation of our year living in Spain. Friday, June 25, 2010. T-minus 7 days and counting. Don't blame me, it was the Celtics. OK, I get home town pride, but that's it? I think I was the only person on the whole Iberian penninsula to stay up all night without the aid of a discoteca. I'm done hating the Lakers for now. OK, I'm not done. I'm just done talking about hating the Lakers. Here. On this blog. We visited 10...

One year in Taiwan. One year in Taiwan. January 2, 2011. I told him it was. I do not know if any will change their behaviors or thoughts because of it but I do know that they all felt something special while we talked about Christ and they now know the true meaning of Christmas. Since then I have often thought of his question. Is this true? That was the first time I was ever asked that but I knew it was. But do I truly act like I know it is true? From → Uncategorized. One Year in Texas

Debate: Does ALF Believe in God? By Jake and Glenn. The famed folkie Joan Osborne once pondered a similar question: “What if God Was One of Us? Not to me, and I’m a polytheist. You made the right choice in the election, but the wrong choice in this debate. What you describe here, historical inaccuracies aside, does not make the case that ALF believes in god but rather the case that ALF. How about “The True Book”? 8221; To whom is unclear, but assuming it was our NON-dark lord is extremely reasonable....

One year in Thailand

One year in Thailand. Monday, April 9, 2012. We spent a few days over new year in Chiang Mai. We arrived by overnight train which is definitely a more comfortable way to travel than by bus. It isn't that much more expensive as well. We got into to Chiang Mai early morning, and found accommodation, a motorbike and a map (the three essentials whenever in a new place). In Chiang Mai we checked out many temples and Buddha statues, did some shopping at the local markets and ate lots of tasty Northern Thai food.
