Tuesday, July 22, 2008. On women and children. Last week, Alyssa and I went to a potluck dinner of women farmers in the area, hosted by a flower grower named Joni. Joni grows beautiful flowers, and before we sat in a circle and broke bread, she invited everyone to pick bouquets from one of her gardens. The remarkable part was that they were talking about farming, which is not typically thought of as women’s work. But in fact, the last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the number of farms run by women.

These is now about 1/7th of an acre planted in onions and garlic to be used by the restaurant this year. I finished planting on April 1. Hopefully we can get through all of them now that we have a larger processing space. The cover crops of oats and peas are in the ground that will provide the amendments for the mangels, squash, and corn that will be planted, hopefully with a no till method.
