Cape Cod Bander: August 2013

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 2, 2013. For those of you interested in the answer to my questions regarding age of the crossbills I banded, I posted a response from Peter Pyle below for both the White-winged Crossbills and the Red Crossbill, which you can view if you go to http:/ www.capecodbander.blogspot.com/2013/07/crossbills.html. She only had one red waxy tip to her secondaries and her primary coverts were somewhat abraded. On the June 5th we had a rather late migrating SY female Wilson's Warbler,. And had replaced...

Cape Cod Bander: October 2014

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 2, 2014. First half of fall migration. August has been an exceptionally busy month compared to previous years with productivity of some species such as Gray Catbirds, Yellow Warblers, Song Sparrows, and Downy Woodpeckers being quite a bit above average. The majority of these birds were not migrants but began their life on Wing Island. Bander assistant Ron Kielb was excited to band his 1,000th bird, a Northern Waterthrush! We banded 4 American Redstarts in August with the first showing u...

Cape Cod Bander: October 2012

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 9, 2012. We had a great first week of October with many species and lots of birds coming through. We were rained out a few days but still managed a decent assortment. The Eastern Phoebes have passed through for the most part, but catbirds are still here in good numbers. The catbirds are usually gone before high numbers of yellow-rumps come in, but not this year! During their molt in their second year, woodpeckers will replace some outer primary coverts but retain the inner ones. While I ...

Cape Cod Bander: November 2012

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 1, 2012. We also captured another HY Black-throated Green Warbler. On the 12th we had many birds of 25 species, one of our best days for diversity. We were surprised to find Cedar Waxwings still in full juvenal plumage. It was our first day of Marsh Wrens for the fall caught in the same net, one being exceedingly smaller than the other one. The plumage coloration on the back is quite stunning. We scoured the area to determine the best place to set up nets. These sparrows have very poin...

Cape Cod Bander: October 2013

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

Friday, October 11, 2013. September started off very slow for migrants this year. Our first fall migrating American Redstart came in on the 5th, a young male. He looks very much like an adult female at this time of year. The lower mandible was split in two. She was a healthy weight though so she must have been able to eat enough to keep her going. On the 6th we caught a Blackpoll Warbler, not the earliest date for this species in the fall, but we normally start catching them a bit later. A hatch year mal...

Cape Cod Bander: July 2014

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 31, 2014. We banded our first baby bird of the season on 2 June, a Northern Cardinal. We were unable to sex it at this point while it was still in full juvenal plumage. Young cardinals have very brown bills that will slowly turn to orange as the fall progresses. This bird was quickly processed and returned to his parents straight away. Seemingly out of nowhere, bobwhites were heard in the fields, we hadn't heard them before or after the 8th. We even caught one! Our numbers started improvin...

Cape Cod Bander: June 2014

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 5, 2014. This has not been our best year by far for spring migration monitoring. Cold, windy east winds prevented us opening on many days and the nice SW winds we hope for brought rain. We did manage to get out 16 days this month and had numerous highlights including a first for our station, which I will discuss later in this post. This brightly colored one had an odd molt of the primary coverts with the outer 2 being retained symetrically, so I thought it may be a case of suspended molt.

Cape Cod Bander: May 2014

http://capecodbander.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 7, 2014. We got a late start opening the banding station this year due to the cold weather and other circumstances. But I was finally able to get out on 21 April for a few hours. What a beautiful morning it was! The air was crisp with temps in the 40's but the sun sure felt good after our long winter. The receding high tide brought an aroma of the sea around the island and it smelled wonderful! I could hear flickers calling all over the island and finally captured one mid morning,an older ...

Traveling Man

Saturday, April 4, 2015. Friday I needed to stick around in the room and get some emailing done, and then a conference call until just after noon. Judy took a walk and re-acquainted herself with Robson Street and environs. In the afternoon we walked the area together, eventually dining in a Japanese restaurant on Burrard, just off Robson. It was very nice. We then wandered around some more, eventually lunching at a Pho restaurant, and making our way back to the room. I can't get the NCAA basketball g...

Traveling with Dick, Beth, and Moe

Traveling with Dick, Beth, and Moe. Saturday, October 8, 2011. This home looked like something out of Star Trek. The architect owner lives in one section and uses the other one for his art gallery. We traveled by Museum Row, University of New Mexico, Isotope Park, the Pit, the zoo, Botanic Gardens, Tingley Beach. These doors are always open. Supposedly a ghost occasionally appears. We didn't see one in our visit. San Felipe de Neri Church built in 1706 and collapsed in 1792 then rebuilt in 1793. We've be...

On the road with Donlen -On the road with Donlen

On the road with Donlen. Hertz and Donlen: Reflections on Year One. August 31, 2012. Last year at this time we were finalizing what was to be one of the most significant events in Donlen history. On September 1, 2011, it was official. Donlen became a wholly owned subsidiary of The Hertz Corporation. I remember feeling many things those few days prior to finalizing the agreement. I was excited, but also confident that we made the right choice for Donlen. Meet Rachel Hands, Donlen SVP Sales and Marketing.
