Shortlisted for the New York State Council on the Arts Independent Project Grant 2016. Team: Can Vu Bui, Lane Rick, James Tenyenhuis. Canal lacks greenspace, and this is what Borrowed Scenery provides: a garden oasis, overflowing with plants instead of Prada bags; a hiccup of contemplation and nature; a fleeting escape from the chaos of Canal Street.

This project is a proposed design for a new headquarters for CASIS, the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, on the west side of First Avenue, between East 39th Street and East 40th Street in Manhattan. The goal of the project was to increase public awareness of CASIS through the manipulation of materials and movement and the juxtaposition of normative and spectacular forms. That by the year 2080, much of it will be partially or completely under water. We were interested in the ways in which Coney Island would be able to salvage its identity during the coming years as the peninsula slowly disappears. FIGMENT: Phone Charger Outlet.

The rehearsal spaces spill into the interior of the bridge, physically separating them from the main public spaces of the building. The underbelly of the main atrium mimics the forms of the Gaustavino tiled vaults above the rehearsal spaces, uniting the two interiors and blurring the line between the old and the new.
