Now Cough: February 2005
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 26, 2005. Oh sure, wiping the snow and scraping the ice off the car is getting to be a real drag now. What started as a seasonal, 'pretty' snow has devolved into a freezing cold chore. I especially hate:. Boots dragging snow indoors and the puddles of filthy wetness. The sweaty humidity that comes from exerting in this weather. The 'where the hell are my gloves' routine. The 'which damn coat did I put the my keys/sunglasses/inhaler in' routine. Back in the USSR. Ann Cooper of the Commi...

Now Cough: AOL and HuffPo
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2011/02/aol-and-huffpo.html
Monday, February 07, 2011. First, a disclosure: I used to be in charge of AOL News for four years. Looking back, folks might say it was an old school, main stream approach to news. We cared about accuracy and speed, credible information, the best news brands but also being fast and responsive and driving discussions. Did it work? Helped derail the AOL and Time Warner marriage. But so did poor management and confused leadership. Are things better now? Sure, why not. HuffPo is not a news habit; it is the c...

Now Cough: Various Thoughts on the eve of Winter
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2011/10/various-thoughts-on-eve-of-winter.html
Monday, October 17, 2011. Various Thoughts on the eve of Winter. Here is one reason I love the 21st century:. Doing more than dreaming about going to the stars. Assessing risk, and doing it anyway. Comment after the death of Dan Wheldon at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway:. We all had a bad feeling about this place in particular just because of the high banking and how easy it was to go flat, said Oriol Servia, the Newman/Haas driver, in a statement. We knew it could happen, but it’s just really sad. Citigro...

Now Cough: December 2005
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 08, 2005. If it weren't so serious, I'd laugh. Jon Stewart nails Bush and the ludicrous inactivity since 9/11. Posted by John Barth at 10:58 PM. Playwright Harold Pinter claimed his Nobel today and besides picking up the medal and the check, he delivered a blistering broadside at US foreign policy. ( See the video of his speech. And works by William Appleman Williams will hear echoes in Pinter's remarks:. And are they in all cases attributable to US foreign policy? The answer is yes th...

Now Cough: Fi Fo Fo Frum
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2008/10/fi-fo-fo-frum.html
Sunday, October 26, 2008. Fi Fo Fo Frum. David Frum, a former Bush speechwriter, told The Sunday Telegraph that Republicans should now concentrate all their fire on "the need for balanced government". It's hard to see a turnaround in the White House race," he said. "This could look like an ideological as well as a party victory if we're not careful. It could be 1980 in reverse. Oh really, Mr Frum? And where have YOU been for the last 8 years? Posted by John Barth at 10:03 PM. This is good for you.

Now Cough: Times 'a Changin' in CWE
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2010/08/times-changin-in-cwe.html
Sunday, August 01, 2010. Times 'a Changin' in CWE. The best Starbucks in the country- -certainly the friendliest - - is being rebuilt: all new windows, wall treatments, lighting and what looks like insulation. In the meantime the diligent crew is working out of a large tent. BCE, the Vietnamese place, two doors from Audi-K, now is offering hookahs. This place always looks empty; not sure why it would be because their food is really good. Posted by John Barth at 12:17 PM. This is good for you.

Now Cough: August 2005
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 10, 2005. Getting to Know You (Know Who). The First of Many. An angry Republican has begun pulling on a string that, if true, could unravel all of the nonsense the Bush administration has fed us about the 911 attacks. Congressman Curt Weldon, who was simple a chubby media hog county commissioner back in the 80s, now claims that a secret Army unit (Able Danger- -you gotta love that one) had identified Mohammad Atta and three of the other 911 hijackers. Not the FBI and not the CIA. That l...

Now Cough: Layoffs
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2008/12/layoffs.html
Saturday, December 06, 2008. Here are the heads of the Big Three automakers: Wagoner from GM, Mulally at Ford and Nardelli from Chrysler. Why, as a condition of getting a federal bailout, should they NOT be forced to resign? Plenty of regular Joes and Janes are going to see their lives sent into a tailspin because of their (and their boards') incompetence. Why do these guys get to keep their jobs? Clearly they are not indispensable. UPDATE: As I was saying. Posted by John Barth at 4:12 PM. Fi Fo Fo Frum.

Now Cough: May 2005
http://nowcough.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 18, 2005. You Guys Go Ahead. I'll Watch from the Moon. As the 'war on terror' continues, the Bush administration is once again doing all it can to make us feel safer. The New York Times is reporting that the Air Force, and the White House, are taking steps to make it possible to deploy offensive weapons in Earth orbit. The militarization of space (look, satellites are 'defensive' weapons) has long been a big no-no. I recall as a kid a stamp that pledged to keep space peaceful. This is a qu...
