Open Source Exile: July 2014
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
An open sourcer in exile. Monday, 14 July 2014. Adrian Pohl wrote some excellent thoughts about the current state of BIBFRAME at http:/ www.uebertext.org/2014/07/name-authority-files-linked-data.html. The following started as a direct response but, after limiting myself to where I felt I knew what I was talking about and felt I was being constructive, turned out to be much much narrower in scope. Let me give you an example. There were two separate issues here: a mismatch between the Person in Wikipedia ...
Open Source Exile: Unexpected advice
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2011/11/unexpected-advice.html
An open sourcer in exile. Wednesday, 30 November 2011. Today I was in "Digital initiatives in Māori communities" put on the the talented Honiana Love and Claire Hall from the Te Reo o Taranaki Charitable Trust. About their work on He Kete Kōrero. At the end I asked a question "Most of us [the audience] are in institutions with te Reo Māori holdings or cultural objects of some description. What small thing can we do to help enable our collections for the iwi and hapū source communities? The Iwi / Hapū list.
Open Source Exile: Why card-based records aren't good enough
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2009/05/why-card-based-records-arent-good.html
An open sourcer in exile. Tuesday, 5 May 2009. Why card-based records aren't good enough. Card catalogs have a long tradition in librarianship, dating back, I'm told, to the book stock-take in the French revolution. Is a perfect example of this kind of thing. As a data format to directly replace a card catalog of printed books, it can hardly be faulted. So what was held in libraries in 1789 that MARC struggle with? Systematically linking discussion of particular works with instances of those works. All o...
Open Source Exile: Is there a place for readers' collectives in the bright new world of eBooks?
http://opensourceexile.blogspot.com/2011/03/is-there-place-for-readers-collectives.html
An open sourcer in exile. Wednesday, 23 March 2011. Is there a place for readers' collectives in the bright new world of eBooks? The transition costs of migrating from the world of books-as-physical-artefacts-of-pulped-tree to the world of books-as-bitstreams are going to be non-trivial. There's a whole range of books that I'm interested in that don't appear to be on the business plan of any of the current eBook publishers, and I'll miss them if they're not converted:. Local writing by local authors.

My Linux Journey.and some things along the way. Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Since almost day one of my Linux experience, I've loved the idea of having a Mac-like dock at the bottom of my screen. I've never really been fond of the Windows-like panel that comes by default. The first dock that I used was Avant Window Navigator. And I was very happy with it, and I still think that it's an awesome dock. However, I decided that it was time for a change. Docky is a dock that is actually a theme used by Gnome DO.

An open sourcer in exile. Monday, 3 October 2016. How would we know when it was time to move from TEI/XML to TEI/JSON? This post inspired by TEI Next. How would we know when it was time to move from TEI/XML to TEI/JSON? If we stand back and think about what it is we (the TEI community) need from the format :. A common format for storing and communicating Texts and augmentations of Texts (Transcriptions, Manuscript Description, Critical Apparatus, Authority Control, etc, etc.). If we really want to ponder...
