Marhaven's Crane Page: Whooping Cranes Arrive at Chasshowitzka NWR

Saturday, January 24, 2009. Whooping Cranes Arrive at Chasshowitzka NWR. The Eagle has landed.so to speak! Eta: Since I posted this blog I read at Operation Migration that it was actually #804, not #824 who resisted setting down at Chasshowitzka. It took 88 days to make the journey and I am constantly overwhelmed at the commitment of the crew that makes this possible. Here are some videos from YouTube of the arrival and interviews in St Marks. Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership. Link to Main Blog.

Bird brained stories!: August 2005
http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 25, 2005. Yesterday morning, after arising at the surreal hour of 4am, I was privileged to see a bird that at one point numbered 15 in the world. The experience is one about which I've dreamed, to the point it made my list of 43 things to do. Yesterday, I got to watch the flight training of juvenile Whooping Cranes. I have been jealous of Ural ever since, but after yesterday, my green-eyed monster has been sufficiently fed. We were taken through an oak savannah restoration area that was ...

Bird brained stories!: November 2005
http://birdbrainedstories.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 26, 2005. Dreams of boreal species. Spending a few days in far northern Wisconsin to eat turkey and visit with in-laws, I had visions of Boreal Chickadees, Grey Jays, Redpolls, Crossbills, Bohemian Waxwings and any northern owls dancing in my head. What did I find? Let's see. A bunch of Black-Capped Chickadees and four Mourning Doves. That's it! I seem to have better luck staying right where I am, like I did before we left for the great white north. I was in the car right away. Sure en...

Sand Points: April 2012
http://sandpoints.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 8, 2012. Dozens of times I've sat at my keyboard wanting to write something profound, witty, or interesting, but the words weren't there. I wanted to write more about that communist sonofabitch in the White House and those self-centered, spineless, moral cowards in Congress, but feared being placed on someone's watch list. How sad that we can no longer exercise a freedom that was so expected, cherished and respected only a few years ago. As I retire from active blogging, I hope my friends a...

Susie B’s Travels. See what I’m up to! February 12, 2009. Gum Slough Kayak Run. This route was crazy! It was 8 hours of paddling, over and under fallen logs. We did see amazing wildlife and cheated death a few times. Overall a grand adventure. It started with a mile paddle up the Withlacoochee River from Inverness, FL. We met a few gators on the River. We got beached about 20 times by fallen logs. It was more like an obstacle course than a stream. This guy is a limpkin. We made it to the springs! We ran ...
