About Operation Rainbow Australia. Operation Rainbow brings together a volunteer group of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Nurses and support staff from Australia and the United States. Operation Rainbow Australia Limited first visited the Philippines in 1990, and has returned one or more times each year since. On average 100 patients are treated for free each year. Operation Rainbow employs no staff. As such, all donations are directly used in providing surgical care.

Cleft defect occurs with increased frequency in the Philippines, with one in 300 babies born with a cleft defect. In Australia the incidence is approximately one in 700 births. Both genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. There is estimated to be 60,000 children with unrepaired cleft deformities in the Philippine population of 92 million.
