Physicians, orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists in the host country perform the initial patient assessments to determine the candidates for surgery. These include medical and orthopaedic histories, x-rays and diagnoses. Approximately 4 months prior to a trip a small Operation Walk Team (2 orthopaedic surgeons and 2 RNs) visits the country further triages and screens patients. A core group, orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Cecil Rorabeck, Director of Operation Walk Canada, Caroline Grenier, RN, Operating Room Coordinator and Anna Hales, Team Coordinator is responsible for patient selection, surgical procedures and the coordination of the entire team including logistics. Health care professional team members are practicing experts in their field and have current licensing from their respective professional colleges or associations. All team members are volunteers.
