What is a COOP? Volunteers have been at the heart of Orcas Food Cooperative since the beginning. Through countless planning meetings and a 6-month long remodel of the old Homegrown space the Co-op would not have been possible without the many people who donated their time and skills to realize the vision of our island cooperative. What is a COOP? Cooperatives around the world generally operate according to the same core principles and values, adopted by the International Co-operative Alliance in 1995. Cooperatives trace the roots of these principles to the first modern cooperative founded in Rochdale, England in 1844. Cooperatives are voluntary organizations, to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political, or religious discrimination.
