Motifs in Music: January 2014
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, January 27, 2014. Homework Assignments - Hmmmm! I can't believe that I haven't done this sooner, but in my string classes I have sent home three homework assignments this year - two for the beginners, one for the second-year players. Of course, we all expect our students to practice, and some of them do. Actually, many of them do. But what exactly do they practice? So, three weeks ago, I handed out a page that said something like this:. Subscribe...
Motifs in Music: June 2014
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Tuesday, June 24, 2014. On Facebook I found a link to a series of lessons on fiddling, and the first lesson on Bile 'Em Cabbage Down is free. You can find it here. Like Orff, it uses a simple song and then adds variation upon variation with some room for improvisation and creation. Like Fiddle Camp, it teaches the song by ear. Well, that's like Suzuki, too. It also throws in some chord theory. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Catching Up and Fiddle Camp. Interesti...
Motifs in Music: Elna Claire Valine
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014/08/elna-claire-valine.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, August 25, 2014. A thousand years ago when I was in 4th grade, I started playing the violin in the school program. My teacher was Elna Claire Valine, and I just found out that she passed on last week. After a long career in music. She taught in the Wichita Public Schools for 33 years and was the principal second violinist for the Wichita Symphony. She probably never knew that I grew up to be a string teacher in the public schools.
Motifs in Music: German Christmas Carols
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014/12/german-christmas-carols.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, December 15, 2014. We went to a concert of Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols. This past weekend. Not only did we get to hear the lovely piece in an old church, but after the presentation the audience got to sing along with the women's choir some Christmas Carols. Some I knew pretty darn well - O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World. And even Stille Nacht. But there were two in German that I did not know, so I can add them to my repertoire.

The Words of a Princess, the Daughter of a King. October 31, 2016. May I Introduce My Room? I thought it would be fun to take you on a tour of the music room. I’m absolutely loving this room. Last year’s setting up and tearing down tables, chairs, etc… every music class makes me really appreciate this year. Drink lots of water! Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Friday, October 10, 2014. I am working my way through Rhythmizing the Bow. Little by little, and I am also looking at all the free videos on Fiddlevideo.com. Which focuses on Fiddle and Scottish Fiddle. When I finish getting what I want from the free videos, I will probably subscribe for a month or two or more to access more of the content. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Music Blogs of Note. Motifs in Music: December 2013
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Thursday, December 12, 2013. El Roble and CHS music. Wow, two concerts this week. On Tuesday I heard the CHS orchestra (along with Jazz Band, Concert Band and Color Guard) and tonight I attended the similar version at El Roble. I am always so happy to see my former students continuing and doing so well with their music. The El Roble Orchestra has 45 students, and I counted up only seven that I didn't already know. So, yeah, I will continue to teach!
Motifs in Music: April 2014
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, April 14, 2014. I am posting this photo in my blog so that I can pin it to my Music Teaching Ideas board on Pinterest. A music teacher on the AOSA Facebook page posted it after her 4th grade students had come up with this idea themselves. Since I have boomwhackers as well as a music staff on my rug, I might just do this with my students, too! Thursday, April 3, 2014. My Many Colored Days. Here is my playlist:. Red - Hoedown from Copland's Rodeo.
Motifs in Music: Playing Off-Beats
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014/10/playing-off-beats.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Playing off-beats should be simple, right? Should be, but they aren't. I think I am pretty good at clapping the off beats, but playing them in orchestra is another matter. Today I almost skipped over a section of music I was practicing for orchestra. Just off-beats, I thought. Then I decided to play with the metronome, and I found that even at a relatively relaxed tempo, I would be good for about 3-4 measures, and then, wham!
