Cape Arago Audubon Society, Coos County, Oregon. Directions to Millicoma Marsh:. From US 101 at the south end of Coos Bay, follow the sign to Coos River, Allegany. Cross Isthmus Slough Bridge, stay on 6th Ave (bear left at end of the bridge). Go north on 6th Street for 0.5 mile, turn left at D Street. Go 2 blocks, turn right on 4th Street. Go another block to brown sign with binoculars and arrows on your right. This is a good spot to look for raptors, including Red-shouldered Hawk and White-tailed Kite.

Out and About Oregon Birds: Snowy Plover in Clatsop County

http://outandaboutoregonbirds.blogspot.com/2015/08/snowy-plover-in-clatsop-county.html

Birdfellow Social Field Guide. N Pacific Surface Analysis. Real time Surface winds. Saturday, August 1, 2015. Snowy Plover in Clatsop County. If you want to see another "beach" plover, check out my previous blog I posted at end of July "Where in the World". I think the first three photos are of a hatch-year. Fresh feathers and buff edges to coverts. Back to a hatch-year. Not sure if this is same hatch-year as the bird above. If not, then I saw three plover. The adult with the hatch-year. After finding zi...

Out and About Oregon Birds: December 2014

http://outandaboutoregonbirds.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Birdfellow Social Field Guide. N Pacific Surface Analysis. Real time Surface winds. Tuesday, December 23, 2014. Roots: Looking Back at 50 Years of Birding. But I must have been interested in birds before that anyway. So I can probably still celebrate something. I am probably at the end of my 50th year of birding rather than the start, but close enough. So where did this bird brain come from? I lived in California until I was 10, then we moved back to South Jersey to be closer to the grandparents. Onc...

Out and About Oregon Birds: March 2015

http://outandaboutoregonbirds.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Birdfellow Social Field Guide. N Pacific Surface Analysis. Real time Surface winds. Monday, March 9, 2015. There is not much snow up in the Mt Hood Forest this winter. Areas where there should be 5-6 feet of snow have none, only a few small patches. The area looks like how it should in early July. I have taken advantage of this by going on some hikes. Below is a view of Mt Hood from Palmateer. I should be chest deep in snow at this location. Below is a s. Huck reluctantly posing at Devil's Half Acre, the...

Birdfellow Social Field Guide. N Pacific Surface Analysis. Real time Surface winds. Saturday, February 21, 2015. Newport Pelagic: Feb 21,2015. The highlight of the trip was spotting two Parakeet Auklets. I tried to set a waypoint on my iPhone but the location it shows does not make any sense. My phone was accurate out to about 20 miles out, then it went crazy. I think we were about 27 miles offshore, open to being corrected. Here are a few photos of some that we saw. Northern Fulmars were common:. I ligh...

http://outandaboutoregonbirds.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Birdfellow Social Field Guide. N Pacific Surface Analysis. Real time Surface winds. Monday, May 25, 2015. I had never been to the Ochoco National Forest, it is east of Prineville , OR. I fixed that serious omission this past weekend. The Ochoco is easy to spot on the map, it is the large green rectangle shaped forest with a distinct white spot in the middle, that is the Big Summit Prairie, a large cattle ranch that reminds me of the Catlow Valley. My camp spot in the trees near the prairie. As I was ...
