Lincoln County Historical Society. The Lincoln County Historical Society’s collection. Contains more than 40,000 artifacts focusing on the 1850s to the present. The collection consists primarily of objects made or used on Oregon’s central coast, and is the largest collection of such objects. The collection includes: clothing, quilts and other textiles, firearms, tools, furniture, jewelry, china, arts and crafts, musical instruments, Native American objects, and maritime objects. A major museum and interactive center on Newport’s working wharf, the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center features maritime-related exhibits and art. Lincoln County Historical Society. Lincoln County: A Brief History. In 1776, when the United States was declaring its independence. Oyster Barges, 1890. In 1861, two events again changed the course of history. A sea captain was shown beds of rare, delicate oysters in Yaquina Bay. On April 2, 1948, 26 people met as the first members of the Lincoln County Historical Society. Their first goals included publishing excerpts from Lt. Theodore Talbot’s diary of his visit in 1849 to the area and preserving Yaquina Bay Lighthouse for use as a museum. Over the next decade, those goals were met, as well as many others.
