Sunday, 10 February 2013. Casa Oretani - The Story Part I. So, it's been a while since I updated this blog, my Flickr. Account or anything really. I haven't disappeared, I've just been busy. Sort of. The story is that, as some of you know, myself and Mrs. HibernoManchego bought ourselves a "casa de pueblo" in 2011 in a beautiful little village, 13km out the road, called Picón. The Church of San Salvador in Picón (XVth Century). The Rollo de Justicia, also XVth Century. The square and town hall. So we get...

Wednesday, 19 September 2012. Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). Spotted Flycatcher (Muscicapa striata). Out at Valverde the other day, there was a great flurry of activity in some of the trees on the track up to the volcano. To the casual observer they were just little brown birds flying about. In fact, speaking to some local ladies last year, they told me that they didn't know they all were different. They just looked like little brown birds. Zitting Cisticola (Cisticola juncidis). Then you got the ...

Wednesday, 1 August 2012. Montagu's Harrier - male (Circus pygargus). Montagu's Harrier - female (Circus pygargus). In 1802 he wrote his most famous work, the two volume Ornithogical Dictionary; or Alphabetical Synopsis of British Birds. Montagu's Harrier - male (Circus pygargus). Apart from having his name associated with these beautiful birds, the Montagu's Harrier, which are quite common in the cereal fields around Ciudad Real, he also had his name associated with two fish, a blenny and a snapper.

Wednesday, 30 May 2012. Gold in the Hills of Picón. Golden Oriole ( Oriolus oriolus. There's a glint of gold in many of the woods these days, but the woods in Picón are absolutely gleaming with it. No you can't make jewellery with it, but it sure does decorate the area. I'm talking about Golden Orioles ( Oriolus oriolus. Despite their bright colours these birds are quite difficult to see in the trees but their flute-like calls are much easier heard. Golden Oriole ( Oriolus oriolus. Thursday, 24 May 2012.

Sunday, 24 June 2012. Do I Not Deserve a Name? Underwing Moth (Catacola nymphaea). I mentioned in a previous entry about Hawk-moths. What caught my attention though was not just the stunning patterns on its forewings, but also the orange of the underwings, which reminded me somewhat of a Meadow Brown ( Maniola jurtina. Or Spanish Gatekeeper ( Pyronia bathseba. Hopefully it will get a common name sometime. Find stunning moths or go birding in La Mancha, Spain with Oretani Wildlife. Links to this post.
