About | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/about
I am a writer based in Southampton in the UK. I hate writing about myself. I would much rather sit with a coffee and talk for hours about my work. But, I can tell you a few, maybe irrelevant, things. So here it goes: I’m a vegetarian, my favourite animals are bears and my favourite Disney character is Mufasa (I know, it’s tragic) I love books with gripping characters and tantalising cliff hangers. I think that’s pretty much all you need to know. The coffee I promised is waiting on my main page. Sometimes...

Writery Habits | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/07/21/writery-habits
Posted by Jodie Louise. July 21, 2015. I love routine. I just love it. When I am ticking along in a good routine I feel safe, I get work done and I am happy. Over the last year or so I have had to let go of a lot of my routine and habitual behaviours. I’ve learned that it isn’t healthy to have a precise plan in mind because I cannot control the world and things do pop up (That’s counselling for you). Put a different sauce on and it’s a different meal). What I am trying to say with all this is that routin...

Books that Influenced The Novel | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/07/05/books-that-influenced-the-novel
Books that Influenced The Novel. Posted by Jodie Louise. July 5, 2015. This last week I have been pretty ill, curled up, in pain, on top of my covers as it’s been bloody hot. Aside from wondering at how much longer this could last, if the doctors at A&E had missed something, if I would make it to Sunday, I started thinking about the various pieces of fiction that have influenced my current novel. 1 The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh. 2 Gaia Theory by James Lovelock. 4 Atonement by Ian McEwan. It’s so ...

Summing It Up… If Only. | Jodie Louise

Summing It Up… If Only. Posted by Jodie Louise. May 18, 2015. As a writer on twitter I often get the question: so what’s your novel about? And let me tell you, that is a hard question to answer at the best of times. But on twitter? That is a whole other level of evil. That’s 140 characters to explain a story that spans 70k words. I could make some witty comparisons but it’s a Monday and I’ve just been on a train for a few hours so, you know, make them up yourself. May 18, 2015 at 1:14 pm. You are comment...

Encouragement | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/06/04/encouragement
Posted by Jodie Louise. June 4, 2015. I look at something that I should do, I think of something that I have been working on, and it whispers to me. You could be working harder, you should be doing more, there are more important things than writing, there are more important things than. I have to fight it if I can, last night I won out in the end because I managed to get to sleep. And this morning I have woke up feeling a little optimistic. That’s probably a post for another day. I don’t hate you, I’m just frustrated. | Jodie Louise

I don’t hate you, I’m just frustrated. Posted by Jodie Louise. June 22, 2015. I might be going crazy. I have been working on and off on The Novel for a while now. It’s mentioned constantly throughout my blog and I have learned so much from the simple (I wish) act of writing it. It’s the first novel I have taken through replotting stages, the first story I have had confidence in. That’s huge as a writer. So why, now, six thousand words into a rewrite am I feeling shaky? June 22, 2015 at 10:27 am. For sure...

A Quick, Emotional, Realisation. | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/07/10/a-quick-emotional-realisation
A Quick, Emotional, Realisation. Posted by Jodie Louise. July 10, 2015. By the end of the scene I had tears in my eyes, and even now looking back I know it might be the most touching thing I have ever written. I want to explore their relationship further, even though the current set out of my story doesn’t allow that too much. Just by rewriting and letting myself feel and sympathise with my characters I’ve added this whole new piece to the puzzle. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

The Heartbeat of My Story | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/06/08/the-heartbeat-of-my-story
The Heartbeat of My Story. Posted by Jodie Louise. June 8, 2015. I gave my story a heartbeat. I wanted a way to visualise my novel, and it wasn’t my idea, the method I used. It came from a book by Amanda Boulter called ‘Writing Fiction: Creative and Critical Approaches’ which is probably the best book I have read on the subject. My boyfriend, when I showed him, remarked that it looked something like a heartbeat and I have to say, I love that. The numbers up the vertical axis of my graph, don’t get ...

What’s All This About Medusa? | Jodie Louise
https://jodielouisewrites.wordpress.com/2015/05/28/whats-all-this-about-medusa
What’s All This About Medusa? Posted by Jodie Louise. May 28, 2015. I have always been deeply interested in greek myth. I think it is hard not to be, when you think about what they are, and how they have survived. And it isn’t a good one. I am referring here to my favourite quote about writing, and something that inspires every character I create. So here I am, rewriting. I’m trying my hardest to ignore her symbolism, and I am just writing her exactly how I want to write her without worrying ab...Address...
