Black Snake Homestead: May 2014
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
Friday, May 9, 2014. Our House: A Summary. Nails and screws: $317 (we did not use every one…maybe had 20% left over). Windows and Doors: $172 (used). Tools, weather stripping, lath, extension cords, gutters, stain, paint, lath, fabric, lime). Missing from estimate: Sand, some additional labor, our own labor, the circular saw we borrowed from my dad, runs to the store to pick up more of something, door knobs, and electrical wiring (surprisingly, I think these unexpected costs probably add another $800).

Black Snake Homestead: December 2012
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 27, 2012. Porch, and the beauty of cedar. Cedar went in for the porch decking. We decided to use 2 inch thick boards for extra sturdiness. It's a LOVELY shade of purple! The sun will bleach it grey if we don't coat it with poly, so we will probably do that soon. We treated the rest of the floor joists of the porch with poly, and will do the same for the rest of the floor joists that we can get to. One of the rafters up there is really cool; it still has bark and lichen on it:. 5 Wait o...

Black Snake Homestead: September 2012
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Thursday, September 27, 2012. Day 2 and 3 (half days). On day two we headed over to the build site after I got off work. Ash finished the bracing, and we finished toenailing the porch joists. Toenailing is extremely awkward work, but Ash was on a roll that night and knocked it all out mostly on his own. He swears it was fun, too. Crazy person! Toenailing is when you hammer the nails in at a diagonal angle:. The other way is called, no joke, butt nailing:. Sunday, September 23, 2012. Day One: The Floor!

Black Snake Homestead: October 2012
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 19, 2012. Lost track of work days, since we work on it for 3-6 hour periods whenever we have the chance. Things are going slower than I had hoped, but we're still chugging along. We are taking a vacation next week so we won't be building for a little while. This is a view from inside the house, of the "knee wall" we just put up. That will be the upstairs of the loft, and the highest point of the roof slope. Note the spaces for windows! We started working on the two window seats as well.

Black Snake Homestead: January 2013
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 31, 2013. Sub floor and exterior siding finished. Sunday, January 27, 2013. We put on the first layer of interior plaster! It looks so pretty I want to cry. It's just like I imagined my dream house looking! You can really see the difference between cob (bottom) and light clay straw here. Sunday, January 13, 2013. I can't WAIT to move into this thing. It's cozy and beautiful. I will have to get rid of at least half my stuff! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). By Black Snake Homestead.

Black Snake Homestead: August 2012
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 26, 2012. We got our lumber from a local saw mill, and saved about 30% of costs by doing so. Now it has to sit for about 4 weeks so it can dry out. Then we will start building! I altered our design a little after reading an amazing book called "A Pattern Language". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). By Black Snake Homestead. Black Snake Homestead: March 2013
http://blacksnakehomestead.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 28, 2013. Life in the Little House. These photos are by my sister Alyssa, who is visiting this weekend. There is a certain type of quiet in this house that I have never experienced before. Maybe it's because it has earthen walls and floors, but we seem to be surrounded by this force field of peace when we enter and shut the door. It feels cozy and sheltering, but open, bright and cheery as well. Tuesday, March 19, 2013. First night in the house! Coat 1: 100% linseed oil. We had a bucket w...

Black Snake Homestead: August 2013

Sunday, August 18, 2013. The interior ceiling has fabric, but that's not mouse proof, so I will have to buy plywood to finish it off. But it will have to wait until I am done teaching summer camp (next week). My poor house! Sunday, August 4, 2013. We have had many many pounds of blackberries off of only two small plants! They have wicked thorns though; it's quite a challenge to get to them. Which is why the deer have missed out on them, I think. Makin' music on the front "lawn":. By Black Snake Homestead.
