Orienting Ourselves

Being the spontaneous people that we are, we signed up for an adventure to the orient to teach, and eat and see what there is to be seen. For the next six months we will be immersing ourselves in Asian culture while attempting to work as teachers in Dalian, China. We are bringing with us a love of the unknown, a good sense of humour and an adversion to donkey stomach. Thanks for reading: xie xie.

Orienting Ourselves: September 2011

http://orientingourselves.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 29, 2011. Bring on the Mongolians. The rink in Shenyang. just waiting for coach Bombay and the Ducks. Every year Maple Leaf has a week long holiday (instead of a number of long weekends) at the beginning of October. Well it took some negotiating, and some pressure from the Vice principal of the high school (who is on the hockey team and related to the other teacher from the junior high that wanted to go on the trip- sometimes it is good to have connections! So we were able to consiste...

Orienting Ourselves: The Great Escape: Jan/Feb 2012

http://orientingourselves.blogspot.com/2012/02/great-escape-janfeb-2012.html

Wednesday, February 22, 2012. The Great Escape: Jan/Feb 2012. So, we are back in China after more than a month of gallivanting around South East Asia. And it’s about time we updated the blog. We have a tonne of stories and pictures to share, so we will divide it up over several blog posts and string them out over the next week or so. Keep checking back for more updates! Part One: Paul’s Primal Primate Encounter. The bus took some six hours to get from Medan to Bukit Lawang. It probably should have be...

Orienting Ourselves: The Gilis, aka Paradise

http://orientingourselves.blogspot.com/2012/03/gilis-aka-paradise.html

Thursday, March 15, 2012. The Gilis, aka Paradise. We travelled from Ubud down to the West Coast of Bali to spend a night at Padang Bai before heading over to Lombok and the Gili Islands. We had a wonderful driver who acted like a tourguide/historian for us the whole trip. Cruising on tiny streets packed with scooters, trucks and men herding ducks, we weaved our way down from central Bali to the coast. Herding Ducks, easier than hearding cats? Yet another of Dale's animal friends. Can I stay for dinner?

Orienting Ourselves: Lake Toba

http://orientingourselves.blogspot.com/2012/02/lake-toba.html

Monday, February 27, 2012. Lake Toba. Paul didn’t know much about it, but he had an extra day in Northern Sumatra and thought: “Hey it sounds cool… Danua Toba. Cool climate. Volcanic Caldera. Agricultural heartland of Northern Sumatra. Home of the Christian/Animist Batak people…. Let’s check it out.”. The next day Paul had until 1:30pm to poke around the traditional villages and go for a swim in the refreshing waters. Then it was back on the boat and into a mini-van that would take him back to Medan.

Orienting Ourselves: October 2011

http://orientingourselves.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 27, 2011. We woke up in Lanzhou and spent the minimum amount of time getting from the train station to the south bus station. From there we began a 3 hour long bus ride to Linxe, a mostly Muslim town to the west of Lanzhou. We had a brief layover in Linxe, before we caught another 3 hour bus to Xiahe. Dapanjie. literally the best part of Linxe. Literally translated it means "big tray o' chicken". Could have been the interior of BC. Fall colours were in abundance. We spent the rest of th...

The thoughts and revelations of a true genius…are not found here. Should have posted a little while ago. March 5, 2013. The First Half Marathon was a pretty good event considering:. 1) I had only been running for 4 weeks after getting back from Africa. 2) I haven’t raced in a while. Got to see a load of people I haven’t talked to in a while, and enjoy a fantastic day. and yup, the soup at the end is my favourite! Shout out to my friend’s dad, Rick for completing his first half marathon! Enter your email ...

The thoughts and revelations of a true genius…are not found here. 3 weeks out from IM Arizona. October 25, 2013. Training is going well! I don’t think I’ve ever ran so much and so fast all in one week. My schedule now has a 25k run on Wednesdays and a 30k on Sundays. The distance isn’t a problem, its trying to hold targeted paces during the run that’s hard. Last Sunday’s run was. 75k at 4:05/km for a total of 30k. I got to MC my friends wedding! Congrats Tina and Rob! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Interest...

The thoughts and revelations of a true genius…are not found here. January 25, 2013. Turns out I have some time in front of my computer! Yah, visited my brother in South Africa! Traveled the coast with a group of super cool canadians. Wow you’re lanky. Your teeth are sharp! Thanks for biting my foot…. One of these things doesn’t belong! Can’t get any closer to Antarctica (in Africa). Yup, straddled two oceans. Cape Augulas Light house. There’s a lot of shipwrecks along the coast of SA. Picture says it all.

One week away! | Hooch's World

https://ycheng.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/one-week-away

The thoughts and revelations of a true genius…are not found here. February 4, 2013. Its been 4 solid weeks of training, and I’m gearing up for the Frist Half on the 10th. Pretty much felt like I was starting from scratch as I didn’d exactly train much in Africa. Also found a bunch of pictures from Miami. I was racing Ironman 70.3 Miami…Pretty windy racing experience! I was blown all over the roads. No pictures from the race itself though. I stayed in south beach – pretty cool area. Enter your comment here.

The thoughts and revelations of a true genius…are not found here. Big Update and a informal commitment. September 24, 2013. Since the last posting I’ve had a few adventures! In May I headed over to Europe to visit my former research supervisor/professor in the Netherlands and while I was there I ran the Prague Marathon! This summer was pretty fun! Super busy with coaching summer swimming, racing, and finding time to work full time. Even got to meet Steve King! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. You are commenti...
