May | 2015 | Origin of Specious

Philosophy and economics, mostly. Monthly Archives: May 2015. Williamson’s Philosophy of Philosophy. I’ve been trying to make my way through Tim Williamson’s. The Philosophy of Philosophy. For the second time. I read it as PhD student and, I suspect, thought I was getting more out of it than I was in fact. Now I think I’m seeing a bit more. That’s much too big for me to comment on in a blog. But one little thing I noticed was Williamson’s attack on Dummett:. Continue reading →. May 15, 2015. I’ve p...

Philosophy and economics, mostly. Monthly Archives: February 2015. Krugman, Debt, and Mr. Micawber. Ok, first read Paul Krugman’s piece on debt. It’s good that mainstream economists are getting more interested in debt. Maybe there might be some spillover into the market for my book. So I shouldn’t bite their hands, especially when I broadly agree. But I can’t control myself. Continue reading →. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. February 10, 2015. Philosophy and economics, mostly. Monthly Archives: April 2015. Cheap Tricks and the ‘Logical Fallacies’. My exchange with ‘Ramanan’ in the comments thread of my last post helped me to appreciate the discipline I’m in. In philosophy, I deal regularly with people who disagree passionately with my views and aren’t shy about voicing their disagreement. But I can almost always expect certain standards to be maintained. An argument to show that Q does, in fact, follow from P,. What I do not. Expect them to ke...

Philosophy and economics, mostly. Monthly Archives: July 2015. How to Sell an Idea – Wisdom from Abba Lerner. From ‘Functional Finance and the Federal Debt’ (. Think Simon Wren-Lewis, Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz, or Thomas Piketty. But now it is these compromises that are under fire. Thus we arrived at the modern consensus, in which ‘New (ersatz) Keynesians’ debate with ‘New Classicals’ about how many angels can dance on the head of a neoliberal pin. Borrowing from the public. There is an alternative. Richard Musgrave (1959): “The government is never forced to borrow in the market or to maintain and service outstanding debts.”. When I speak to other economists about how money and fiscal spending work, I often get strange looks: if what I say is true, than economists would have taught something that is wrong for the last couple of decades! That must be impossible. If I could name some historical sources to back up my claims? August 10, 2015. Corbyn Mania reaches Bradford. Addre...

There is an alternative. On going viral and BBC bias. About the way it reported Doughty’s resignation. Reaction to the story was quite mixed. Again, being honest, it was mostly divided along the lines of whether or not you support Jeremy Corbyn or not. If you don’t support Corbyn, you probably didn’t see what all the fuss was about. One observation I would make is that political journalists in particular thought this was a total non-story. Their basic reation was “So what? January 10, 2016. I caught the ...

There is an alternative. Surely Labour would ‘remain in opposition for decades’ and become ‘unelectable’ if Corbyn DOESN’T win? How can Labour expect to challenge the Tories without those of us that only voted for them to get the Tories out, the ‘hold your nose’ voters? Surely Labour would ‘remain in opposition for decades’ and become ‘unelectable’ if Corbyn doesn’t win? I just can’t see how Labour would stand any chance of winning the election in 2020 without us ‘hold your nose’ voters? August 13, 2015.

There is an alternative. Corbyn needs to find new ways to frame the economic debate. I had thought about writing something in response to this article. By Labour MP and Corbyn supporter John McDonnell about Corbyn’s economic plans. I was going to disagree with the way he felt the need to talk about how Corbyn would aim to “clear the deficit”. I was going to do that, but then someone else did the job for me and much better than I could. Economist Bill Mitchell wrote this blog. Annoyingly, I can’t ma...
Why a vote for Corbyn is a vote for electability – alittleecon

There is an alternative. Why a vote for Corbyn is a vote for electability. Notes from a Broken Society. Three days before the 1983 election, I attended a rally in Oxford Town Hall. It was in the days when it was still possible to come in off the street to a Labour leader’s rally, and the speaker was Michael Foot. The atmosphere was revivalist, a packed hall cheering on their much-loved leader. How could Labour possibly lose in the face of such enthusiasm? But of course the result is history. Follow Blog ...

Philosophy and economics, mostly. Infinite Debt, Future Generations, and Hilbert’s Hotel. Commenting on my last post, Nick Rowe helpfully explained his argument. That governments, by running deficits, can ‘steal from the future to give to the present’. I now see his point. Simon Wren-Lewis gives a similar explanation. Here I want to get onto something more mathematically interesting. An interesting sort of Hilbert’s Hotel. Scenario to show that debt can be used to create intergenerational inequalities.
