ORNAMENTAL PASSIONS: October 2014
http://ornamentalpassions.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Devoted to the unexpected details that help to make life in the city worth living. Friday, 24 October 2014. Hyde Park, London WC2. The Joy of Life is by T.B. (Thomas Bayliss) Huxley-Jones and was created in 1963. It was the last work commissioned by the Constance Fund, a sum of money set aside by the painter and patron of art Sigismund Goetze to form a memorial to his wife Constance. As it turned out, he died first and the fund was administered by Constance until her death in 1951. Links to this post.
ORNAMENTAL PASSIONS: Riverside Walk Gardens, Millbank SW1
http://ornamentalpassions.blogspot.com/2015/06/riverside-walk-gardens-millbank-sw1.html
Devoted to the unexpected details that help to make life in the city worth living. Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Riverside Walk Gardens, Millbank SW1. Is unmistakably by Henry Moore. Created in 1963, this version was presented by the sculptor to the Tate in 1978, who lent it to Westminster City Council to enliven a rather dreary triangle of riverside embankment created by the way the street has to veer inland to allow room for the roundabout at the end of Vauxhall Bridge. The final result was impressive.
ORNAMENTAL PASSIONS: Tate Britain, Millbank SW1
http://ornamentalpassions.blogspot.com/2015/06/tate-britain-millbank-sw1_18.html
Devoted to the unexpected details that help to make life in the city worth living. Thursday, 18 June 2015. Tate Britain, Millbank SW1. The Rescue of Andromeda was the 'look at me - I've arrived' work of Henry Fehr, modelled in plaster in 1893 when he was an assistant to Thomas Brock and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Lord Leighton, who had produced an acclaimed painting of the subject (left). Fehr's take on the myth is unusual. Conventionally, she is shown standing with her wrists chained behind her...
ORNAMENTAL PASSIONS: City Basin Lock, Regent's Canal N1
http://ornamentalpassions.blogspot.com/2015/07/city-basin-lock-regents-canal-n1.html
Devoted to the unexpected details that help to make life in the city worth living. Friday, 31 July 2015. City Basin Lock, Regent's Canal N1. One of the great pleasures of cycling round London is coming across works of art like this, unobtrusively mounted on a wall on a canal towpath, quietly brightening my day. Entitled A World in Islington,. Helped', as they say. My favourite panel shows narrowboats being hauled by horses to the basin where they are being unloaded. Benches by the artists stand in front ...
ORNAMENTAL PASSIONS: Edinburgh Gate SW1

Devoted to the unexpected details that help to make life in the city worth living. Thursday, 28 February 2013. The Rush of Green. Was Jacob Epstein's last work, completed on the day he died in 1959 and cast in bronze posthumously. The one element of the old building that survives is Epstein's group, despite the fact that it is generally regarded as very second rate. "An embarrassing decline from his work of a few years before," is Pevsner's verdict. I think that is rather unfair. The family, Dad, Mum...

Thoughts from a Mountain: October 2014
http://thoughtsfromamountain.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Wednesday, 22 October 2014. An aside: "How", you might well ask, "does the car journey last as long as the bus journey, especially as you don't stop in the five major towns en route? And indeed: "Isn't it cheaper and more environmentally friendly to use public transport? I suppose that the composition has changed since then. This was a. River in the extreme background.

Thoughts from a Mountain: November 2014

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Sunday, 23 November 2014. WHY BOB GELDOF AND HIS MATEYS WON'T BE SHAMING ME INTO PARTING WITH MY HARD-EARNED PENNIES. Oh how it warmed the cockles of my heart to see Sir Bob Geldof and his superannuated millionaire mateys bestir themselves once again for the poor benighted Africans! Oh how much self-loathing and hatred I felt as I mused upon the fact that U2 gave away t...

Thoughts from a Mountain: August 2014

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Sunday, 31 August 2014. On Sanlúcar de Barrameda. As I have mentioned in previous posts, Sanlúcar. De Barrameda is a relatively undiscovered jewel among the smaller coastal Andalusian cities – and its catchphrase “. Calidad de vida”,. Or “Quality of Life” is one of the truest I have ever come across. For further general information click on. A panoramic shot of the beach.
