Architect 4 Life: November 2012
http://architect4life.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 9, 2012. For many, youthfulness is a must, and its pursuit borders addiction. Those youth seekers will fight age at every turn, capturing and maintaining that youthfulness to any extreme; even at the cost of unrecognizably changing their appearance. Architecture too can age gracefully or can quickly become dated, losing the vivacity it once had. Similarly, some buildings wear a facade that fails to take root further into the building. As we experience those buildings, much is missing.

Architect 4 Life: January 2014
http://architect4life.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 30, 2014. Architecture is Sporting a New Look. Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way.". With the Superbowl just days away, I thought it might be fun to take a look at some fascinating examples of stadium architecture. Beijing Aquatic Center in Beijing, China. Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, China. David S. Ingalls Rink at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut USA. Designed by Eero Saarinen, is a beautiful example of...

Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Framing, Football, and Fall. Some BIG beams have gone in at Casa Gertruda that makes you wonder."What in the world was holding the original back corner of the home up? The master bathroom corner has a double cantilever that was there originally.but somewhat precariously supported. So, we have installed some substantial parallam beams to support it.the right way! Nothing is falling down on our watch! In the meantime, Jeff and I are trying to distract ourselves. But really.fo...

Monday, April 6, 2015. Charles Eames, an influential architect and furniture designer said it best. Work continues along on Casa Gertruda as we move. That is what Mies van der Rohe meant by. God is in the details.". While you can have a brilliant design with a flowing floor plan, seamless transitions, and vaulted airy spaces, the attention to details or lack thereof seals its fate. Wrapping the house a few weeks ago. Beginning of kitchen cabinets. This part of the construction phase is always an exciting...

Architect 4 Life: December 2013
http://architect4life.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 2, 2013. It is the ability to see,. To have a mental picture. It can be something seen in a dream or trance, with prophetic significance. It is something beautiful or pleasing. The last few months have caused me to really consider the concept of “vision.”. A few years ago, I was suddenly diagnosed with a detached retina that required multiple surgeries to correct. It was a frightening and unexpected chain of events. We can merely observe, or we can see more deeply. For example, we can se...

Architect 4 Life: September 2012
http://architect4life.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Monday, September 17, 2012. While speech is a powerful tool, communicating without words can be even more provocative. Babies do this, letting us know without words when they feel distraught, need something, or feel content and safe. Lovers do this, exchanging a knowing look that they understand, communicating shared humor, disappointment, hurt, love, or desire. A vibrant and trendy restaurant can talk of excitement and energy. It can communicate drama and cosmopolitan flair without a word. The beauty of...

Architect 4 Life: February 2015

Sunday, February 22, 2015. Selfie at the jobsite. I can’t even begin to explain how exciting this process of building our house has been! There is an incredible vibe at the jobsite. The crew is energetic, enthusiastic about the job, fully engaged in the process of both construction and creativity, and seriously hard at work! Every single time that I stop by the jobsite, whether just to swing by and check it out, or if we have our weekly meeting, that vibe is present in full force. All the jobs that I hav...

Architect 4 Life: March 2013
http://architect4life.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 28, 2013. Is there a Spring in your step? 8220;You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.”. 8213; Pablo Neruda (Chilean poet). And with that there is a sense of renewal. Flowers once dormant are beginning to bloom; trees once bare are budding. It is undoubtedly a time to RE-. For many, it is time for a spring cleaning, throwing out the clutter, cleaning and organizing our homes. Along with that order comes a refreshing sense of purpose and peace. So rather than ch...

Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Hammer time.and then some. The framing crew has been working away on Casa Gertruda. We are talking about lots and lots of lumber! The roof at the great room is framed, the deck above the office is framed, and the interior walls and ceilings at the kitchen and dining room are up! Things are moving along, and we are movin’ on up…to the second floor! The gym walls are going up and the master bedroom has expanded. It is all starting to take form. After looking at tubs and seeing th...
