Now larry summers (in the WSJ) and vivek wadhwa (in the WP) have both weighed into the labor picture of the near future. good to see greater awareness of the challenges that are coming down the pike:. neuromorphic systems | otterfowlio
https://otterfowlio.wordpress.com/2012/06/23/neuromorphic-systems
By far the most exciting thing happening in computing today (in my view) is the beginning of neuromorphic architecture. These systems are not like your typical desktop PC. they are designed to mimic the brain. why, one might ask, do we want the latest computer hardware to mimic a forgetful piece of biology that has a hard time with long division? Ah, it is all about power, baby! Pattern recognition and processing. Our computers are terribly inefficient in two ways:. By the defense agency that gave us the...

No hard takeoff, steps to strong AI. I was just reading william hertling’s article on predicting the future of technological progress:. How To Predict The Future. Http:/ www.feld.com/wp/archives/2012/06/how-to-predict-the-future.html. So…instead of imagining a post-singularity world, let’s just imagine a world where computers understand us, or understand our speech well enough to execute directions. this seems eminently reasonable. indeed, apple’s siri is the beginning of that t...Mapping the trillions o...

Archive for the month “April, 2012”. This all began as a presentation to friends regarding the next two decades of technological development and its impact on our/our kids’ working lives. i’m not really a kurzweillian kurzweilai.net. One might think that these jobs can be lost….after all, who really wants to do that work? However, if even 10-15% of our service jobs went to automation it would wreak havoc with our economy. it would make the “great recession” of 2008 look tame. Deep changes like this are n...

Blog - Latest News. Industrial interest in Neuromorphic Engineering. Industrial interest in Neuromorphic Engineering. January 2, 2013. I had the idea of writing this article while talking to a friend over lunch. We were talking about which position I could take in industry, as a PhD student that worked for 3 years in the field of neuromorphic engineering. So naturally, he asked me : are there any big companies working in my field? In this paper, they describe their most recent neuromorphic chip, which is...

Not a lot of news this week, but there are some interesting links I found on neuromorphic engineering. We know that Qualcomm is working on neuromorphic chips, via a company called the Brain Corporation. They recently said in an article. The 2013 edition of the Capo Caccia Neuromorphic Engineering workshop is already over!

Welcome to this second edition of Neuromorphic Weekly! The Canadian website itbusiness. Published an article about the neuromorphic chips developed by IBM. Nothing really new, but it is a good article if you never heard about these chips (They are built using IBM’s 45 nm technology, and are 100 % digital). It is the s...

Blog - Latest News. Neuromorphic Weekly: First Edition. Neuromorphic Weekly: First Edition. April 30, 2013. I think one of the biggest news for the neuromorphic is the announcement of two major projects relative to Brain science: the Human Brain Project in Europe (which I already mentioned in a previous article. And the BRAIN initiative in the US. Both will help a lot to make new advances in the field of neuromorphic engineering. For example, Qualcomm recently joined the BRAIN initiative. Another paper w...

IBM is building neuromorphic systems too. November 16, 2012. We knew for a while that IBM was working on neuromorphic engineering in their center in Almaden, but a paper was released this summer detailing their research. They built purely digital neuromorphic chips, with 256 integrate-and-fire neurons and about 262.000 synapses. Also, all parameters of neurons and synapses can apparently be modified. The chip is built using a 45 nm process. You can find the paper on IEEE Xplore. November 16, 2012. Large-...

Blog - Latest News. Future applications of neuromorphic engineering. Future applications of neuromorphic engineering. December 14, 2012. Recently I have been asking myself : what could be the higher-level applications of neuromorphic engineering? In the application I am thinking about, I am not even speaking about human-like robots, but simply robots that can performs some simple tasks as well, or slightly better than humans. It already exists for simple tasks in factories. But imagine robots tha...Some ...

Otter Cards are available to be picked up for players in grades 9-12. The Otter Football Booster Club is asking each player to purchase 15 Otter Cards for $150. Players sell those cards and keep the money so there is no financial loss. It just takes a little effort to get them sold. For families with 2 players on the team, the cost would be $250 to purchase 25 cards and the same deal as above. There should be NO financial loss! As a species, humans are (not surprisingly) accustomed to thinking of themselves as the end result of evolution. after all, we think, speak, reason, write, create art, humor and emotion. clearly, we’re special…what could be more evolved! One might speculate about the relationship between the above and the fermi paradox (or its foil, the rare earth hypothesis). basically, the quesiton of: given the size of the observable universe, where is all the intelligent life? Does intelligence snuf itself out? I ten...
